Reports to: SEN Team Lead OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE: The SEN Teacher will work with students who have a range of SEN, including learning difficulties, physical disabilities, and emotional/behavioural challenges. They will adapt curriculum and teaching strategies to meet individual needs, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment. OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:
Assess and identify students' SEN, developing personalised learning plans (IEPs/ILPs)
Adapt curriculum and teaching strategies to meet individual needs
Deliver high-quality lessons, using specialised techniques and resources
Monitor student progress, adjusting plans and strategies as needed
Collaborate with class teachers to integrate SEN students into mainstream classes
Work closely with both parents of the children so as to achieve progress
Develop conventional teaching methods so as to meet individual needs as each child
Prepare lessons and resources with which to teach each child as frequently as is required.
Carry out administrative duties- keep and maintain records of each child’s progress
Work hand-in-hand with the classroom teachers to ensure that activities put in place for children are related to the national curriculum
Work closely with other professionals like educational psychologists or psychotherapists
Teach and mentor students, both collectively and individually
Look after children’s social and emotional needs
Help children in personal care, such as hygiene and clothing
To provide communication support to enable full access to the curriculum and any extracurricular activities
To work with individuals and groups of students in class with additional needs under the direction of the class teacher and SEN Team Lead/SENDCO
To help plan and organise learning activities for students being supported
To provide support in a manner which facilitates the child’s cognitive development by removing barriers to learning
To ensure the physical welfare of students and assist students with their physical needs as appropriate and agreed, e.g. assisting with lifting, moving and handling
REQUIREMENTS:
A SEN Teacher should be able to manage the different behaviours that each child exhibits at every given time
Must possess good and effective communication skills in order to determine the needs of each child and help him/her when necessary.
Must be attentive and patient with the children
Good verbal and numerical skills are important
Excellent interpersonal skills to freely relate with people from diverse background
The ability to sensitive to the needs of children and to be firm when necessary0
Ability to work effectively as part of a team
QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s Degree in Education from a reputable institution or any relevant field with a Teaching certificate if educational background is not in the field of Education.
Profession certification in Education such as PGDE, CACHE, NVQ, SENCO etc.
MSc or MBA or professional certificates in Education or any related discipline will be an added advantage.
Experience: 1 -3 years cognitive experience
Solid understanding of classroom activities and teaching best practices
