The Technology group implements, supports and maintains digital capability for NZTA | Waka Kotahi, with our teams designing and delivering new digital initiatives that use data and information smartly so we can keep pace with digital change in all areas of the land transport system. In addition, our teams look after the digital needs of NZTA | Waka Kotahi employees to perform their functions and manage information effectively and efficiently, and in accordance with all legislative and Government requirements. The Senior Data Engineer plays a critical role in designing and creating systems that safely collect, manage and convert raw data into usable information for analytical and insights teams to interpret. The role has a primary focus in ensuring data flows smoothly from source to destination, efficiently, accurately and safely, and will ply a leading role in contributing to the Data Engineering Centre of Excellence (COE) in definition of standards and best practices and in supporting, coaching and training others in the chapter. They also play a pivotal role in contributing to the Technical Business Analysts Centre of Excellence (COE), providing leadership, defining standards and best practices as well as supporting and training for others. We are in the process of building a new Chapter Lead model and this role will report to the Chapter Lead Data. You will be joining us as we are embarking on this exciting journey.Ko koe tēnei | About you To be successful in this role, you will bring: Knowledge and Experience: Requirements and skills
5+ years of experience in data engineering within a production environment
Advanced knowledge SQL and other languages such as Python, R or Scala
Experience with Data Lakehouse's and medallion architecture.
ETL/ELT tools such as Data Factory.
Advanced Analytical tools such as Databricks.
Deep experience with Azure cloud services, big data ecosystems.
Ability to support design, build, and deploy data solutions to support AI, ML, and BI.
Excellent business acumen and interpersonal skills; able to work across business lines at a senior level to influence and effect change to achieve common goals.
Ability to describe business use cases/outcomes, data management concepts, and analytical approaches/options.
Ability to translate among the languages used by executive, business, IT, and quant stakeholders.
Fast learner - to adopt proven standards and practices.
Bonus: Experience with SAP, Airflow, and GIS systems.
Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, software engineering, information systems, or related quantitative field; master's degree preferred.
Certification in Azure and Databricks (relating to data engineering, architecture, data science/analysis) desired.
You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.
