Rural Hospital Registrar - 2025 Training Year

Health New Zealand - Northland
Commencing January 2025

From Whangarei to Dargaville or the Bay of Islands to Kaitaia, there's nothing routine about working in Health New Zealand – Northland (Health New Zealand). Providing healthcare in such a natural and rugged environment provides everyday challenges – but that's what makes a career here so special. And, we're lucky enough to enjoy everything this action-packed region has to offer at the end of the day.

Health New Zealand is committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and holds stewardship for equitable health outcomes for Māori as Tāngata Whenua as the highest priority.

Northland covers an area of 12,600 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 201,000; 50 % of this population is served by four Rural hospitals . Whangarei is the largest hospital in Northland (246 Inpatient beds); providing secondary care services for the region. Whangarei hospital offers accredited training opportunities in all the required runs for the Rural Hospital Medicine Programme and offers a range of elective run options. The four rural hospitals are Kaitaia (26 beds, Level 3), Bay of Islands (20 beds, Level 3), Dargaville (12 beds, Level 2) and Rawene (10 beds, Level 2). Both Kaitaia and Bay of Islands offer accredited rural hospital runs well suited to RHM training. Rawene is a Community owned Rural Hospital. A unique perspective of Northland ( Te Tai Tokerau) is the Rural location and Maori representation ( up to 60% of presentations in Rural Northland).

Grow your skills in our Registrar roles. Working closely with your consultant means you can widen your practice as your skills grow. Working closely with your community means that you will develop an in depth understanding of rural health care in New Zealand.

Northland also provides an accredited comprehensive training programme that allocates RMOs at Whangarei, Kaitaia, Bay of Islands, Dargaville and Rawene as part of their Rural Hospital Medicine training programme. Whangarei is a secondary base hospital providing a wide range of services including ED, medical and surgical specialties, ICU, ENT, O&G, Paediatrics and Psychiatry. All required runs for RHM training are accredited by the DRHMNZ.

We provide close supervision for trainees in acute and outpatient settings, allied with a commitment to teaching. There is an active clinical training programme within the district including support for DRHMNZ academic training components and required courses. https://www.rnzcgp.org.nz/study-with-us/study-rural-hospital-medicine
