The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.
We have an opportunity available to join our team as Public Health Medicine Specialist. This is a permanent, full-time senior role based in Tairāwhiti in the Te Manawa Taki Regional Strategy and Operations Team in the National Public Health Service (NPHS).
The primary purpose of the Public Health Medicine Specialist role is to provide professional leadership for the delivery of public health/population health services. You will work in partnership with colleagues in Te Manawa Taki Regional Public Health Service to share responsibility for the professional quality of public health work and undertake the statutory duties and responsibilities of a designated Medical Officer of Health. The role will see you provide public health medicine advice and guidance around the delivery of a cohesive, effective, and equitable health system to ensure better health outcomes for the population.
This Public Health Medicine Specialist role is for up to 1FTE (40 hours per week) and you will participate in an on-call roster.

You're able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with people at all levels and maximise the quality and contributions of individuals and teams to achieve the organisation's vision, purpose and goals. You have a strong drive to deliver and take personal responsibility, with self-awareness of your impact on people and have desire invest in your own leadership practice to continuously grow and improve.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
- Relevant graduate (and post-graduate) qualifications - Extensive clinical experience and expertise in public health medicine, with appropriate tertiary level professional qualification
- Hold a registered medical practitioner current Annual Practising Certificate and vocational registration as a specialist medical practitioner in a relevant speciality (FNZCPHM, FAFPHM) or similar
- Already designated or able to work towards designation as a Medical Officer of Health
- Full, clean New Zealand drivers license
- You will be able to demonstrate extensive specialised experience normally gained through professional qualifications and significant post graduate experience
- Recent public health service experience including cross sector working with an understanding of the New Zealand health system
- Proven knowledge of equity models and practice in professional field
- Experience advising and working with Kaupapa Māori Health and Social Services and experience working with Pacific Health and Social Services
- The ability to work in complex organizations and with diverse stakeholders
