Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.
We have an opportunity available to join our team as a Public Health Medicine Specialist. This is a fixed term, part-time senior role based in Te Matau a Maui (Hawke's Bay) in Te Ikaroa – Central Region, NPHS.
In this role, you will lead the delivery of public health services, collaborate with NPHS colleagues to ensure high-quality public health work, and fulfil the responsibilities of a designated Medical Officer of Health. You will offer expert advice to support a cohesive, effective and equitable health system, aiming for improved population health outcomes.
This role is 0.8 FTE (32 hours per week) and includes participation in an on-call roster. The fixed term for up to 12 months.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
  • Relevant graduate (and post-graduate) qualifications - Extensive clinical experience and expertise in public health medicine, with appropriate tertiary level professional qualification
  • Hold a registered medical practitioner current Annual Practising Certificate and vocational registration as a specialist medical practitioner in a relevant speciality (FNZCPHM, FAFPHM) or similar
  • Already designated or able to work towards designation as a Medical Officer of Health
  • Full, clean New Zealand drivers license
  • You will be able to demonstrate extensive specialised experience normally gained through professional qualifications and significant post graduate experience
  • Recent public health service experience including cross sector working with an understanding of the New Zealand health system
  • Proven knowledge of equity models and practice in professional field
  • Experience advising and working with Kaupapa Māori Health and Social Services and experience working with Pacific Health and Social Services
  • The ability to work in complex organizations and with diverse stakeholders
