The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand |Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.
The Intelligence Directorate is a function that is regionally networked and collaborative across Health New Zealand, as well as external organisations and agencies. The establishment of the Intelligence directorate in NPHS has given us the opportunity to review our data, analytical techniques, and products, to ensure we are honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Our data and products need to be informative and interpretable; they also need to reflect the voices and stories of our communities.
We have the opportunity available to join our Intelligence directorate in a permanent, full-time role as a Principal Analyst Team Lead – Surveillance. This role will see you provide day to day leadership, oversight and direction on key pieces of surveillance work and to ensure the delivery of quality advice and thought leadership in this critical part of the NPHS Intelligence Directorate. This is the opportunity to play a leading role in the development of actionable insights in public health intelligence, supporting the Intelligence Directorate, and the wider organisation as a whole, to contribute to the agenda-setting activities of Health NZ and the wider health sector.
This role is based in Wellington.
Mōu | About you
You are someone with experience leading and managing a team. You have a deep knowledge and demonstrable experience of programming languages. You are seen as a seasoned professional with relevant experience in public health operational surveillance. You have well-developed analytical and technical skills, including the ability to collect, assimilate, and summarise raw data in a systematic way to build a useful dataset for analysis.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in an area relevant to statistics, data management, data analytics or other relevant field or comparable experience
  • Certification or equivalent experience in using relevant analytical tools for the position such as SQL, R or Python, R-Shiny, and Power BI
  • 10-15 years' experience with strong skills and experience in working independently with databases, statistical, and other software programmes for the capture, analysis, and presentation of data
  • Experience in epidemiology or surveillance in a public health setting.
  • Well-developed technical writing, oral and presentation skills to communicate clearly and concisely in a range of formats, to suit a range of audiences (technical and non-technical)
  • Advanced experience in Microsoft suite expected
