Postdoctoral Fellow - Earthquake Seismology

DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY | TE TARI TĀTAI AROWHENUA
DIVISION OF SCIENCES | TE ROHE A AHIKĀROA

About our team/Mō te tīma
Join our team of researchers at the University of Otago and GNS Science to develop a framework for the integration of the SMART Subsea Cable sensor system into regional tsunami early warning capabilities.
The Role/Te mahi
This Postdoctoral Fellow position is underwritten by a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation hosted by the University of Hawaii.
The work will closely align with complementary work currently being undertaken by a UNESCO Intergovernmental Coordination Group (ICG) of the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (PTWS) task team aimed at quantifying the effects of including disparate geophysical observations into tsunami monitoring and a New Zealand government funded programme aimed at delivering more effective early warning for New Zealand and the greater southwest Pacific.
The work will dominantly comprise two distinct parts:
  • Incorporation of the data into characterising the seismic source for tsunami early warning. This will include exploration of using both accelerometer and high-rate pressure data and experimental DAS techniques.
  • Utilisation of the array to generate tsunami forecasts from direct observations of the tsunami wavefield.
The team will work closely with collaborators in the New Zealand funded Rapid Characterisation of Earthquakes and Tsunamis (RCET programme).
Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
The ideal candidate must have a Ph D in Geology or related field as well as high levels of computation and computer literacy with experience in modelling wave propagation and/or inversion methods.
Further details/Pūroko
This is a full-time (1 FTE), fixed term position for two years based in Dunedin. The salary for this appointment is $86,210 per annum.
Relocation expenses can be negotiated.
The Geology Department is recognised internationally for the quality and breadth of its research and its graduates. Our research is linked strongly to the dynamic geology of New Zealand. In particular, we emphasise process-related research tied to the "active" geology of the South Island, and to the evolution of our unique New Zealand biota.
The University of Otago is a workplace that values and utilises diverse and inclusive thinking, people and behaviours. This means that the contributions of staff with diverse backgrounds, experiences, skills and perspectives are valued and respected.
For further information or to discuss the role in confidence please contact Prof. Andrew Gorman or Bill Fry via the email addresses below.
