Pharmaceutical Sciences Laboratory Technician

SCHOOL OF PHARMACY - HE RAU KAWAKAWA
The role/Te mahi
As a Pharmaceutical Sciences Laboratory Technician in our School of Pharmacy, you will primarily support 200 and 300 level medicinal chemistry and medicine, delivery teaching in a new Pharmaceutical Sciences degree.
You will also support preparation and delivery of the existing PHCY211(Fundamental Pharmaceutical Science) practicals.
Key tasks of this role include:
  • Ensuring undergraduate laboratories run smoothly and the learning experience of students is optimised.
  • Ensuring laboratories run safely and chemical residues and biohazard waste are disposed of appropriately.
  • Assisting academic staff with planning laboratory classes, including maintaining files and ordering chemicals and equipment as required.
  • Setting up laboratory classes, including preparation of required reagents.
  • Shutting down equipment and cleaning up the laboratory at the end of the class.
  • Demonstrating use of equipment and techniques to staff and students.
  • Promoting safe practices in the laboratories.
  • Assisting with invigilation of in-course assessment and administration of examination marking.
  • Keeping good records of reagents and equipment ordered and of laboratory procedures.
  • Ensuring that all equipment is in working order and ready for use.
  • Supporting research staff and postgraduate students as availability allows.

You will be self-motivated, flexible, innovative and open to new ideas that can improve the course and benefit students and staff alike.
The successful candidate will also have:
  • A BSc or equivalent in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a relevant related discipline.
  • Experience in teaching and or research laboratories in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience setting up and demonstrating in an undergraduate laboratory setting.
  • An understanding of basic laboratory and pharmaceutical testing equipment.
  • Good organisational skills and communication skills.
  • The ability to maintain excellent records in a scientific setting.
  • The ability to work alone and unsupervised.

This is a permanent, part time (0.8FTE / 30 hours) position, based in Dunedin. The role commences in February 2025.
The appointment range for this role is $65,281 to $69,648. Top of the range is $74,947, pro rata.
