Location: Hawke’s Bay Hospital and Specialist Services
Service: Mental Health and Addiction Services
Role: Community Psychiatrist: Napier Adult Community Mental Health and Addiction team
Contract: Permanent – full or part time roles available (0.6-1.0 FTE)

About our service and team | Mō tō mātou rōpū
We are looking for an energetic, well qualified and skilled consultant psychiatrist who would enjoy working in a provincial community mental health service.

The Hawke’s Bay Adult Community Mental Health and Addiction Service (CMH&A) provides specialist mental health services to people aged 18 to 65 years who are most severely affected by mental illness or addiction. Our comprehensive services include assessment, diagnosis, treatment, complex case management and liaison with primary care providers. We aim to help people recover and maintain wellness from mental illness and addiction. We have a strong focus, as a publicly funded service, on equity and on meeting our obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi.

Our multidisciplinary teams include psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, an occupational therapist, addiction practitioner and peer support workers. We also offer Māori cultural support through Kaitakawaenga and Pou Whirinaki Hinengaro Maori. We have strong administrative support and a well-developed leadership team.

The Napier Community Mental Health and Addiction Service generally has an active caseload of around 500 people with mental health or addiction needs. Each service user is assigned a key worker, who is typically a nurse, social worker, occupational therapist or addiction practitioner.

Our model of care is flexible and responsive to the diverse needs of our community. We accept referrals from primary care, hospital and specialist services, other districts and we operate a “walk-in clinic”. All referrals are triaged by an experienced nurse, who will consult the multidisciplinary team about difficult triage decisions. Not every service user will be allocated to a psychiatrist, but the majority will require psychiatric input into their care either as episodic consultations or on an ongoing basis, depending on their needs.
