KAIARAHI IWI MAORI ADVISOR

Mō te tūranga | About the role

  • To provide matrix leadership to engage with iwi/Māori and individuals.
  • Provide guidance on Matauranga Māori to ensure that tikanga is integrated.
  • Influence and support the enablement of hapu/iwi to undertake their own hazard monitoring and management strategies and enable the empowerment of whanau/hapu/iwi to be aware of and prepared for hazard risks they are exposed to.
  • Influence and support the enablement of response and recovery during emergencies through Māori networks and focus groups creating resources and toolkits.
  • Implement the Māori CDEM framework and a relevant implementation plan.
  • Enable partnering at local levels to encourage dialogue, action, projects and activities that assist whanau/hapu/iwi with disaster readiness, and which will continue to build resilience in the community.
  • Work with Māori to develop relationship protocols across the region.
  • Influence and support the enablement of iwi and Māori contribution and leadership within the CDEM Group.
  • Building and maintaining enduring relationships with key Māori entities and representatives.
  • Provide specialist advice and support on all things Māori to the CDEM.
  • Availability to be included in an on-call 24/7 GECC Duty Officer roster.

Mō te tangata | About you

  • Existing networks with Iwi/Māori across the Waikato region.
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal.
  • Excellent knowledge of the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • Project management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and sustain successful and effective working relationships with elected officials and executive level officers.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and sustain successful and effective working relationships with external and internal stakeholders.
  • Highly competent in use of MS Office, MS Teams and Outlook.
  • Strategic and tactical thinking skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of Mātauranga Māori.
  • Excellent knowledge of Te Ao Māori.
  • Ability to deliver in a political environment that could be high pressure and rapidly changing.

Mō ngā pūkenga | Qualifications and experience

  • Minimum 7 years' experience in relevant area.
  • Tertiary qualification or relevant experience.
  • Civil Defence Emergency Management - Integrated Training Framework (ITF):
    • Foundation
    • Intermediate
  • IAP2 (International Association for Public Participation) or equivalent
  • CIMS4 or international equivalent

  • You will be working with a broad range of stakeholders across the Waikato Region Civil Defence Emergency Management Group that comprises a consortium of 11 local authorities, iwi, emergency services, lifeline utilities, welfare services organisations, government departments and non-government organisations that operates in the central area of New Zealand’s North Island, referred to as the Waikato region.
  • Our risks are as diverse as the region we care for; from the coastlines of the Coromandel Peninsula to the ‘super-volcano’ in Taupō.
