Charge Nurse Manager (CNM) roles are essential in creating partnerships with Māori across all levels including tāngata whaiora, whānau, Māori staff and the Kaitakawaenga team, and supporting our non- Māori staff to work together in reducing inequity.

Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
OPR1 is a busy 15 bedded unit providing acute assessment and treatment for tangata whaiora over the age of 65 presenting with acute mental health conditions, dementia with behavioural and psychological conditions and palliative dementia care.

We a looking for strong, resilient leaders who will be able to support both tangata whaiora and their whaanau during an acute admission, however also lead the team with a focus on delivering excellent care.

Mental health and Addictions Service in the Waikato are about to embark on a transformation change to be a Māori led service. You will need to be able to embrace these changes and to support the implementation of a Māori led service within your team and the wider service.

The role requires creativity, reliability and exceptional organisational skills.

Key responsibilities of the role:
  • Lead and manage people, systems, processes and resources in a defined care area.
  • Participate in service development planning and improvements.
  • Manage ward quality and risk programmes.
  • Establish and sustain a positive culture and a healthy and safe work environment.
  • Support the pursuit of Māori health gains as well as achieving equitable health outcomes for Māori.

Mental Health and Addictions Services at Waikato delivers a full range of specialty services across the district. We are committed to making a difference with tāngata whai ora and their whānau through working in partnership to create kotahitanga. We believe in delivering services with a strong recovery focus and a sensitivity to cultural aspects of mental health through applying the Treaty of Waitangi principles into practice.

Mōu | About you
To be considered for this position, you will need to be able to work in an environment where you may have to have difficult conversations, advocating what is right for Māori in what is a generally western approach to care.
You do not need to be Māori, however a knowledge of Te Ao Māori and a willingness to learn is essential.
Knowledge of and experience working with tāngata whaiora in mental health settings or corrections facilities or with older people would be of particular value.

You must:
  • Be a Registered Nurse with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and have scope to work in mental health.
  • Have demonstrated significant clinical experience.
  • Have a passion for making a difference to the lives of our tāngata whaiora, and
  • Support the expression of hauora Māori models of care and mātauranga Māori.
  • Support Māori oversight and ownership of decision-making processes necessary to achieve Māori health equity.
  • Be willing to lead change to truly make a difference.
  • Display initiative and resourcefulness that will allow you to navigate the variety of challenges you could face.
