z/OS System Installation and Maintenance: Install, configure, and maintain the z/OS operating system, along with related components such as JES2/JES3, SMP/E, RACF, and TSO/ISPF.
System Customization: Customize the z/OS environment to meet business requirements, including parameter configuration, workload management (WLM), and system exits.
Software Installation and Upgrades: Install, upgrade, and maintain third-party software products on z/OS using SMP/E, ensuring all necessary patches and updates are applied.
Subsystem Management: Administer and support key z/OS subsystems such as CICS, DB2, MQ, and IMS, ensuring smooth operation and integration with applications.
Performance Monitoring & Tuning: Monitor and analyze system performance using tools like RMF, SMF, and OMEGAMON, tuning system parameters to ensure optimal performance and resource utilization.
Problem Determination & Resolution: Troubleshoot and resolve system issues, including abends, performance bottlenecks, and resource constraints, providing support for production and non-production environments.
System Security: Implement and manage security policies and controls within the z/OS environment, including RACF or equivalent security products, to ensure data integrity and compliance.
Disaster Recovery: Develop and maintain disaster recovery plans, ensuring the z/OS environment can be restored in the event of a failure, and participate in DR tests.
Storage Management: Manage DASD and virtual storage, optimize I/O configurations, and ensure data availability and integrity across storage subsystems.
Automation & Scripting: Write and maintain scripts (REXX, JCL, etc.) to automate repetitive tasks, improve system performance, and streamline operations.
Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation of system configurations, changes, procedures, and troubleshooting steps.
Support & Collaboration: Work closely with application development, network, security, and other infrastructure teams to support projects and resolve complex issues.
Technical Skills:
Strong knowledge of z/OS internals, SMP/E, JES2/JES3, and key components like RACF, TSO/ISPF, and SDSF.
Experience with z/OS subsystems such as CICS, DB2, IMS, MQ, and VTAM.
Expertise in system performance monitoring and tuning using RMF, SMF, and monitoring tools like OMEGAMON or Main View.
Proficiency in storage management, I/O subsystem configuration, and DASD management.
Hands-on experience with automation scripting (REXX, JCL) for system management tasks.
Familiarity with security practices and tools (e.g., RACF) for managing access control and system security.
Knowledge of disaster recovery planning and implementation for mainframe environments.
Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience as a z/OS System Programmer, including installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the z/OS operating system.
