EHS Manager

Job Description:

We are looking for an EHS Manager to join our team in Costa Rica.
SUMMARY: Develop, implement, and maintain Environmental, Health and Safety programs in alignment with government agencies and corporate standards. Manages, directs, and controls the EHS functions supporting plant-wide operations in a broad and diverse workforce. Individual will have overall responsibility for planning, budgeting, implementing, and maintaining cost and methods to ensure employee safety, health, and environmental compliance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Evaluates both existing and proposed processes relative to their impact on environmental, health and safety regulatory compliance. Provide EHS technical information and guidance to improve processes and systems in safety, engineering design of equipment (including equipment guarding), and new construction in the facility.
  • Responsible for managing an EHS staff mentoring and guiding their continued development and performance.
  • Obtain and maintain environmental & safety permits and licenses as well as prepare and submit the required applications, reports, fees, and letters to government agencies.
  • Manage and review loss histories and OSHA Log summaries & associated records to identify trends and make recommendations to management. Lead all work injuries and illnesses investigations identifying root-cause and obtaining closure on countermeasures.
  • Assures that required records are managed and maintained including but not limited to industrial hygiene studies & related employee communications, SDS, Master Chemical List, OSHA 300/300A summary reports, Incident Investigations, Air Emissions Compliance, Hazardous Waste, First Aid Certifications and associated Medical Surveillance Programs.
  • Develops and further enhances process for performing periodic self-inspections to ensure operations meet regulatory and corporate standards.
  • Promote safety awareness, through the development of programs and the engagement of the stakeholders. This includes the formation, management, and leadership of an employee safety committee.
  • Ensures the right EHS required training including support for new employees.
  • Partners with Corporate EHS on initiatives, and projects to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Supports with active participation in department projects, initiatives and goals.
  • Stays up to date with environmental, health and safety regulatory changes.
  • Exposes EHS metrics to site management.
  • Prepares and controls departmental budget.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in EHS roles, including at least 5 years of supervisory/people management experience, is mandatory.
  • Experience in an EHS role within a Medical Device or Pharmaceutical manufacturing environment for at least 5 years, with a focus on compliance, is required.
  • Advanced English proficiency is required.
  • A Master's degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Industrial Hygiene (Certified Industrial Hygienist - CIH certification) is a plus.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Knowledge of safety and environmental local Regulations. Ability to interpret and integrate environmental, health and safety requirements into business systems. Must be skilled at developing and managing key written EHS programs including but not limited to IIPP, Haz Com, outbreak Mitigation, Ergonomics, Hearing Conservation Programs, Working at Heights, Forklift Safety, Contractor Safety, Emergency Action Plans, Fire-Life Safety, PPE, Hot Work Permits, Ionizing/Non-Ionizing Radiation, Respiratory Protection, LOTO, Storm Water, Hazardous Waste Operations and Air Emissions Compliance. Must be familiar with developing processes and procedures that conform to safety and environmental standards. Individual must have detailed EHS technical knowledge of Costa Rica regulations and standards.
Comfortable using software such as Word, PPT, Excel. Ability to multi-task. Ability to lead and manage self-directed work teams. Ability to audit areas identifies non-compliance to requirements, and develop/oversee action plans for corrective action. Written and oral English communication skills required. Able to read blueprints schematics and drawings. Must understand and have ability to analyze production lines to detect EHS potential risks.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, create dashboards/metrics and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
