Natural Resource Manager

Job Title: Natural Resource Manager
Location: Lennox Island First Nation
Job Type: Full-time position for 1 year with potential of an extension
Reports To:
Band Administrator, Lennox Island First Nation
Summary:
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Natural Resource Manager to lead our natural resource initiatives. This role is vital in advancing our commitment to sustainable practices, conservation, and community engagement. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in resource inventory and assessment, planning and policy development, and will have a passion for wildlife, forest, and water resource management.
Roles and Responsibilities:
• Conduct comprehensive assessments of natural resources, including wildlife, forests, and water.
• Develop and maintain up-to-date inventories of natural resources, ensuring accurate data collection and analysis.
• Lead the development and implementation of strategic plans and policies related to natural resource management.
• Collaborate with government agencies, stakeholders, and community members to establish best practices and regulatory frameworks.
• Design and implement wildlife management programs that promote biodiversity and habitat conservation.
• Monitor wildlife populations and assess the impact of management practices on ecosystems.
• Oversee sustainable forest management practices, including reforestation, timber management, and pest control.
• Work to enhance forest health and resilience in response to climate change and other environmental challenges.
• Implement and manage programs for the protection and sustainable use of water resources.
• Collaborate with local agencies to address water quality and supply issues.
• Develop and lead public education initiatives to raise awareness about natural resource conservation and sustainability.
• Foster community involvement through workshops, seminars, and volunteer programs.
• Coordinate emergency response plans related to natural disasters affecting natural resources.
• Work with local emergency management agencies to ensure preparedness and resilience.
• Develop and manage budgets for natural resource programs, ensuring efficient use of resources.
• Identify and pursue funding opportunities, including grants and partnerships, to support initiatives.
• Complete and submit regular progress reports required by funding organizations and Band Administrator.
• Build and maintain relationships with governmental agencies, non-profits, and community organizations.
• Advocate for policies and practices that support sustainable natural resource management at local, provincial, and federal levels.
• Create work plans to guide program delivery.
• Deliver programs during the day, evenings and weekends as required.
Qualifications:
• A degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Ecology, or a related field.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in a natural resources management position, with a focus on wildlife, forestry, or water management.
• Strong knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and best practices in natural resource management.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Proven ability to manage budgets and secure funding.
• Experience in public outreach and education programs.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of First Nation cultural traditions and/or work experience in a First Nation.
• Available to work days, evenings and weekends, when required.
• Ability to handle multiple projects, complete tasks and meet deadlines.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Criminal record check.
Compensation:
• Salary range: $60,000 - $65,000 per year based on experience. After a three-month probation period, the employee is eligible for a benefit package.
