JOB OVERVIEW
Are you a creative, experienced science communicator with a passion for bringing research to life for a broad range of audiences? As a member of the Strategic Communications team at the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), the Manager, Research Communications develops and implements public relations, earned media, fundraising and internal communications strategies that promote CCS’s research programs. In this role, you will help drive public interest and engagement in CCS-funded research by building awareness of research programs, impact and promise and by positioning CCS as a national leader in cancer research and the charity of choice for those who wish to support cancer research.
As a science communicator, you will lead the adaptation of scientific materials for a variety of audiences using clear, concise and compelling language. To accomplish this, you will collaborate with multiple stakeholders, including CCS’s in-house research, revenue development and digital teams, along with CCS-funded researchers, research institutions and research community partners. You will work closely and regularly with the research team to understand their needs and capitalize on emerging opportunities to amplify their efforts.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:
  • Working in close and regular partnership with the research team, lead the development and execution of public relations, earned media and internal communications strategies related to CCS’s research programs.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to celebrate research progress and achievements and position CCS as a thought leader in cancer research in Canada.
  • Lead the creation of compelling, plain language research communications materials for internal and external audiences, including research project summaries, research impact stories and reports, social media posts, website content, media releases and staff resources.
  • Manage key research communications channels, including research content on cancer.ca and the CCS Research X (Twitter) account.
  • Work closely with internal partners, specifically the research and revenue development teams, to create integrated and aligned research communications strategies that highlight the impact and potential of CCS-funded research.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key external partners, including CCS-funded researchers, research institutions and research community partners.
  • Prepare CCS spokespeople for interviews and presentations related to cancer research.
  • Oversee strategy to expand and enhance research storytelling capacity and content through CCS’s Story Centre program.
  • Review research communications materials created by other teams to ensure consistent, accurate messaging about research across CCS’s various channels.
  • Measure and analyze the success of research communications strategies.
  • Provide ongoing direction, recognition and feedback to one direct report, and identify opportunities for development and coaching as needed.
  • Foster a working environment that highlights the talents and strengths of each team member.
  • Ensure that hiring practices are inclusive.
  • Encourage growth and development opportunities for all team members.
  • Champion CCS as a hero in the face of cancer.
  • Actively contribute to our culture of justice, belonging, equity, diversity, and inclusion by ensuring that all staff feel represented and heard regardless of their gender, age, religion, ethnicity, and nationality or race.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate degree and/or post-graduate certificate in communications, science communications, public relations, or journalism, or sciences. Education in cancer biology or general life sciences an asset.
  • 5 or more years of experience working in research field, research communications or a science communications role required.
  • Experience working for a charity or health care organization an asset.
  • Experience producing and implementing research communications strategies, plans and materials
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of and comfort with using digital communications, including social media
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills to successfully engage with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong organizational, time management, project management skills
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, including a keen attention to detail and ability to uphold brand
  • Experience managing and developing a direct report an asset
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and multi-task a diverse workload within a fast-paced team environment with minimal supervision; Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite
  • A collaborative team player with the ability to think strategically, be proactive, and take initiative
  • Ability to work occasionally outside of regular business hours as required
  • French language proficiency an asset
