Lead Youth Program Coordinator
35 hours per week
OVERVIEW
In alignment with Jordan’s Principle our programs are for Indigenous children and youth ages 5-18 currently living in Inuvik. Our goal is to provide our children and youth with a seasonal approach to programming that incorporates traditional teachings with respect to harvesting and cultural education year-round.
We truly believe our children and youth’s educational journey starts on the land with cultural education by connection to the land. We also strongly believe if we provide opportunity for our children and youth to grow their healthy minds and unlock their potential there will be no limits to their future; our future, our way.
Our programs are interactive and engaging, allowing each participant to observe, learn, and try at their own pace, in their own way. Our Elders, Traditional Knowledge Guardians, & Program Coordinators are present during delivery and demonstrate practical and real-life applications of traditional land-based knowledge and experiences.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Manager of Educational & Cultural Programs, the Lead Youth Program Coordinator will proactively conduct outreach activities to engage Nihtat Youth & Children and other Indigenous Youth & Children of Inuvik to promote mental health and well-being, resilience, self-esteem, confidence, personal identity, cultural connection and academic achievement.
The Lead Youth Program Coordinator will create and maintain a positive atmosphere of trust, safety, and inclusion and while doing so in a fun, energetic, professional, compassionate, and confidential manner.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop programs, work plans, and schedules based on the agreed upon educational and cultural approach of Nihtat Gwich’in Council (NGC)
  • Maintain daily attendance and record keeping of program participants
  • Deliver on-the-land based educational and cultural programs for small groups of youth and children ages 5-18 throughout the year
  • Provide and ensure the care, safety & wellbeing of our children and youth. As the Lead Youth Coordinator you will be responsible for ensuring continued mental and physical wellness of all program participants while in your care and that of your fellow program staff
  • Work collaboratively with Managers, Elders, Coordinators, and Knowledge Guardians
  • Drive our NGC vans, trucks, and vehicles as transportation for program participants where needed
  • Provide supervision, guidance and mentoring to other youth coordinators and program staff
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working with children and youth
  • Lived experience and knowledge of traditional and on-the-land living, harvesting, and cultural activities
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and demonstrating traditional skills and land-based activities and/or demonstrated ability to work alongside an Elder or Knowledge Guardian to deliver such programming
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and demonstrating traditional cultural skills such as sewing, beading, language development, clothing making and/or demonstrated ability to work alongside an Elder or Knowledge Guardian to deliver such programming
  • Demonstrate positive and collaborative communication while maintaining a professional, positive and flexible attitude with children, youth, parents, fellow youth coordinators, and supervisors.
DESIRED CERTIFICATIONS & TRAINING
  • Food Safe (training to be provided if necessary)
  • First Aid (training to be provided if necessary)
  • Certificate, Diploma, or other training/education in the area of child or youth study (ie: nutrition, guidance, development, skill development, coaching)
  • Valid Class 5 drivers license mandatory, while Class 4 is preferred; ability to provide a clean 5-year driver’s abstract report (completed within 2 weeks preceding signing of job offer)
  • Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Check (completed within 2 weeks preceding signing of job offer)

RENUMERATION AND TERMS
  • This position is for 35 hours per week based on a flexible schedule to be determined
  • Renumeration for the Lead Coordinator position is $39.50 per hour plus Northern Allowance and a comprehensive benefits package.
  • The Lead Youth Program Coordinator will work from the Nihtat Gwich’in Council office in Inuvik as well as in and around Inuvik including various locations outdoors, on-the-land and in other alternative environments
