JOB DESCRIPTION:
HR Project Partners is currently accepting resumes for a Health and Safety Superintendent on behalf of our client, Calibre, Valentine Gold Mine. The ideal candidate would have a minimum of 3 years of practical Health & Safety Experience in a supervisory role and minimum 5 years in an industrial or mining development/operations setting.
Reporting to the Health, Safety, Environment and Training Manager, the Health & Safety Superintendent is responsible to provide leadership; help set direction and oversight for all matters related to occupational health and safety strategies, practices, and undertakings as well provide safe, efficient, and cost-effective project and operational control to Calibre – Valentine Gold Mine. In accordance with legal requirements and company objectives, this role will provide leadership, project, and operational direction to the work teams, ensuring resources, capacity and capability are aligned to the work plans.
The Health & Safety Superintendent is responsible for enhancing the organization's overall safety infrastructure and emergency preparedness and response plans. This position will engage in organizational leadership relating to regulatory compliance while promoting a culture of workplace safety and an accountability framework. The Superintendent will assist in the development and monitoring of health and safety programming and compliance. The position will identify methods to maximize the existing human resources in day-to-day operations and in the case of emergencies, build liaison relationships with external emergency services, promote and provide training programs to staff and stakeholders with a focus on health and safety.
This position will be located at the Project site, working on a 14 days in/14 days out rotation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Develop and coordinate the implementation of occupational health and safety policies and programs for the entire site according to Calibre – Valentine Gold Mine standards.
  • Develop and implement a Safety System, ensuring a safety-first work culture.
  • Directing the day-to-day activities of the Health & Safety team.
  • Develop effective communication strategies to raise the site profile and drive accountability for continuous Health & Safety improvements.
  • Develop, promote, and maintain the organization’s prevention program with daily involvement.
  • Conduct reviews and consolidation of risk registers to identify risks and critical controls that mitigate unwanted events across Health & Safety practices.
  • Ensure corrective actions and lessons learned from internal and external sources are effectively communicated and consistently applied.
  • Drive the use of the Management of Change process with specific focus on the Team Based Risk Assessment function
  • Participate in prequalification reviews of contractor companies to ensure long term commitment to the improvement of Occupational health and safety practices.
  • Conduct risk assessments and determine the required prevention methods.
  • Conduct site inspections to assess/audit occupational health and safety performance.
  • Plan training activities related to various OHS programs.
  • Lead the induction process from a Health and Safety perspective.
  • Develop and manage the Health & Safety budget process.
  • Collect, analyze, report and discuss Health and Safety data and information with relevant supervision to drive continuous improvements against agreed action plans.
  • Support the project and operation in adopting a risk-based work culture.
  • Develop, implement, and support the Emergency Response Team.
  • Perform and monitor audit practices that support all occupation health & safety systems.
  • Manage and support the EMTs and medical services provider in the performance of their duties.
  • Support the development and maintenance of standard work procedures and safe systems of work
  • Conduct periodic analysis of incident data identifying trends and develop targeted interventions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety (degree, diploma, certificate) is required.
  • Minimum 3 years of practical Health & Safety Experience in a supervisory role.
  • Minimum 5 years in an industrial or mining development/operations setting.
  • Provincial Health and Safety certification with valid auditor certification is considered an asset.
  • Knowledgeable in Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
  • Experience in a remote work site is required.
  • A valid driver's license and driver's abstract required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ATTRIBUTES:
  • Demonstrated ability to self-manage and influence change across a variety of working environments.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence others to follow safety practices, procedures, and regulations.
  • Strong understanding of incident investigation and root cause analysis
  • Comprehensive understanding of the development, implementation and monitoring of Occupational health & safety systems.
  • Competent in Risk Management processes related to occupational health & safety practices.
  • Exceptional knowledge and understanding of applicable legislation, regulations, policies and practices related to occupational health and safety.
  • Proficient with data management systems and software programs – MS Office, SAP, Success Factors
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written with ability to communicate at all levels
  • Exceptional conflict resolution, negotiation, and objection handling skills.
  • Ability to combine a focus on the big picture with a keen attention to detail, while working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude with the ability to work within a team or independently.
  • Strong understanding of safety issues and the risks of construction and mining operations.
  • High level of integrity and professionalism.
  • Tactful and mature demeanour with well developed interpersonal skills including the ability to work well with diverse groups.
