Director of Care

Position Summary:
Reporting to the CEO and aligned with the mission, values, and objectives of the Organization, the Director of Care (DOC) oversees the administrative, operational, and quality improvement aspects of Care Services. The Director of Care ensures that all long-term care residents receive resident-centered care that honors their individual needs and preferences, while also involving their family members. This role provides leadership and direction to the interdisciplinary care team while collaborating with external organizations, community partners, and external stakeholders to develop, implement, and evaluate care policies, protocols, and standards. With the support of the CEO, the Director of Care plays a crucial role in creating an enriching environment where people find meaningful opportunities to live, work and volunteer. The Director of Care represents the organization on the site and builds effective relationships with residents and their families, staff, volunteers, community stakeholders and key contacts from Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services (AHS), physicians and other professionals who access the site.
Responsibilities and Authority:
  • Advocacy and Representation:
  • Embody and advocate for the Organization’s values and service beliefs.
  • Program Oversight:
  • Oversee the Continuing Care, ADSP, and Lodge programs, ensuring compliance with healthcare standards and regulations.
  • Manage daily clinical operations, annual clinical budget, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Staff Management:
  • Recruit, retain, evaluate, and develop nursing staff in collaboration with the HR Director, adhering to collective agreements.
  • Ensure staff schedules and rotations align with service delivery needs and attendance expectations.
  • Monitors pay grid levels, vacation accruals, and conduct performance appraisals, addressing performance issues with HR Director input as necessary.
  • Mentor and monitor professional care staff performance, identifying educational needs and development opportunities.
  • Support a diverse and inclusive workplace, lead recruitment initiatives and processes.
  • Quality and Compliance:
  • Develop and implement innovative care programs and services, ensuring compliance with Accommodation and Continuing Care Health Services Standards (CCHSS) and CARF Accreditation.
  • Chair the site Quality Improvement (QI) Committee and oversee the MDS and Point Click Care systems.
  • Support and monitor QI initiatives, including falls prevention, medication incidents, and resident and family satisfaction.
  • Identify, investigate, document, and communicate critical incidents, hazards, and concerns, following up with action plans and risk management.
  • Leadership and Coordination:
  • Promote a culture of resident-centered care, respect, collaboration, quality improvement, resourcefulness, and outstanding customer service.
  • Lead and support clinical leads, therapeutic services, education services, and other professional staff in delivering resident-centered care.
  • Oversee the coordination of services for residents, working with the interdisciplinary team to assess new residents, develop care plans, and conduct care conferences.
  • Maintain working relationships with the site Medical Director, family physicians, and the Professional Advisory Committee.
  • Administrative Duties:
  • Collaborate with the Director of Finance and CEO to develop and monitor the annual staffing, equipment, and operating budget of the Care Services Program.
  • Create a capital equipment needs list, estimating costs and timing for requested purchases.
  • Manage and adhere to the approved annual budget.
  • Assume relevant administrative and managerial duties in the CEO's absence, if not otherwise delegated.
  • Regulatory and Safety Compliance:
  • Stay updated on current healthcare legislation, infection prevention practices, and emergency protocols.
  • Implement and communicate emergency procedures as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation and responsibilities.
Education & Professional Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) with ongoing registration with CARNA.
  • Master’s degree in health care administration or business is desirable.
  • CPR certification and experience with MDS required.
  • Certificates in Geriatric Care/Gerontology, Mental Health, and Palliative Care are desirable.
  • Minimum of five years of staff nursing experience in a continuing care setting preferred.
  • Clear criminal record check in the vulnerable sector.
  • Minimum of five years of leadership/management experience is an asset.
  • Clinical experience in an acute care setting preferred.
  • Up-to-date immunizations and excellent interpersonal skills.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Proficiency in Point Click Care and RAI/MDS systems.
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment, mentor staff, and resolve conflicts.
  • Expertise in senior care, healthcare, or relevant specialties.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Adaptability to change and commitment to professional growth.
Physical Requirements:
  • Demonstrates high drive and focus, maintaining composure in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work extended hours and manage competing priorities.
Occupational Health and Safety Supervisor Obligations:
  • Ensure competency in supervising staff and protecting their health and safety.
  • Ensure staff adherence to OHS legislation, free from harassment and violence.
  • Advise staff of known or foreseeable hazards and report health and safety concerns.
  • Cooperate with OHS duty exercisers and comply with OHS legislation.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: From $49.52 per hour
