Are you a skilled tradesperson with a passion for innovative projects? Do you have experience in high-volume workshops and a curiosity to solve unique technical challenges? Join our dynamic Prototyping Workshop team, where you will provide hands-on technical support to education and world-leading research within the College of Engineering, Science and Environment (CESE).

As a Technical Officer, you will play a crucial role in supporting cutting-edge projects and experiments. You’ll work with students, researchers, and academics to bring complex ideas to life—whether it’s designing a vehicle chassis, crafting a robotic air-hockey table, or working on rockets. You will also provide valuable technical advice on mechanical equipment and assist with laboratory instrumentation across various disciplines within CESE.
This includes:
  • Providing technical advice and support to staff and students on advanced laboratory and workshop needs.
  • Manufacturing and modifying parts using numerically controlled machining (NC) to exact specifications from detailed technical drawings.
  • Assisting with maintenance, calibration, and repairs of equipment used for undergraduate teaching and research.
  • Ensuring compliance with Work Health & Safety (WHS) regulations and promote a safe working environment.
  • Troubleshooting issues and offering innovative solutions in fast-paced environments.
  • Fabricating, welding, fitting, and machining a wide range of materials to meet project requirements.
You’ll impress us with your:
  • Strong background in fabrication, machining, welding, fitting, and hands-on trades work.
  • Experience working in high-volume workshops with various fabrication methods.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to supervise staff and students.
  • A curious, problem-solving mindset with the ability to innovate under tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of numerically controlled machining and technical drawing specifications.
This Fixed Term position is full time at a HEW 5 Higher Education Level located at Callaghan Campus.

  • Completion of a Fitter & Machinist Trade Qualification (including completion of Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade (or equivalent) with related apprenticeship) and extensive relevant trade experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in the effective and efficient use of CNC lathes and CNC machine centres including experience with a wide variety of manual machine shop tooling.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with and support a broad range of stakeholders, including students and staff from diverse backgrounds and skillsets, ensuring a positive, inclusive experience for all stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with broad supervision and the ability to work effectively in a team to achieve goals in complex and specialised environments
  • Demonstrated organisational and problem-solving skills with the ability to meet competing deadlines.
  • Ability to apply a body of broad technical knowledge and experience to solve practical problems.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to undertake and assist with general facility and workshop duties
  • Demonstrated knowledge of workplace obligations to, and experience in leading and cultivating workplace practices and behaviours that promote, support and maintain a safe, healthy, equitable, diverse and respectful workplace; including responding appropriately to adverse accidents, incidents, behaviours, issues, reports and the like.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
  • MIG and TIG welding experience
  • Sheet metal fabrication
  • Forklift, dogman, or rigging tickets
