The Program
The Indigenous Trainee Ranger Program is an exciting and rewarding 18-month opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to gain an entry-level position within the Australian Public Services, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water and Parks Australia.
Throughout the program, you will gain on the job learning and exposure to the workings of the Public Service and Parks Australia. During this time, you will obtain a Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management, complete multiple rotations within the National Park with exposure to Operations, Finance, Tourism and Visitor Services and Joint-Management. There will also be an opportunity to visit other jointly-managed National Parks and Marine Parks for further learning and development opportunities.
Upon the successful completion of the program, you will then be eligible for advancement to the APS3 Level and a permanent position within Parks Australia to continue your career within the APS.
Who we are
Australia’s natural and cultural heritage is unique. The Director of National Parks (the Director) is responsible for six national parks, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, 58 Australian Marine Parks and the Heard Island and Mc Donald Islands Marine Reserve established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Parks Australia is the federal park agency that supports the Director, and they are a division of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the Department). The Job
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to experience conservation and land management practices, day to day Park operations and the ability to communicate and operate in a complex cultural and social environment.
Duties will include:
- Participate in designated park patrols; assisting in regulatory compliance monitoring, incident response operations such as firefighting and suppression, search and rescue, park evacuation and first aid response.
- Assist in maintaining the appearance of the park, reporting, and making safe hazards, preparing camping areas, maintaining of park roads, walking tracks, botanical gardens, removing rubbish, cleaning of park facilities and performing repairs on park infrastructure and assets.
- Assist with the delivery of park interpretive, visitor service and public relations activities including face-to-face interpretive presentations for a variety of talks, walks, slideshows, cultural and educational programs focusing on the natural and cultural values of the Park.

Please note:
- The successful applicant must have the ability to obtain and maintain a working with children and vulnerable people check.
- You will be required to wear an official uniform supplied by the department, including during field operations, in accordance with the department’s uniform policy.
- You may be required to wear appropriate protective personal equipment and clothing to comply with departmental Work Health & Safety policies and procedures.
This program is for new entrants to the APS and staff who want a permanent ongoing role.
Eligibility
- Pre-employment Check - Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment
- Probationary period - Any new engagement to the APS will be subject to the completion of a 6 month probationary period.
