The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts is responsible for the design and delivery of the Australian Government’s infrastructure, transport, regional development, communications and arts policies and programs.


Our work connects and enriches every Australian community, underpins our economy and society, and empowers our regions. We provide policy advice and deliver programs, projects and services in the infrastructure, transport, communications and arts sectors, supporting our regions, cities and territories. The Communication and Change Branch provides high quality advice and support through a range of enabling services, including internal communication services, speechwriting services, strategic communication services, media liaison, social media engagement, advertising campaigns and design and video services.


The opportunity we have available



We have an opportunity for an EL1 Content Strategist and Designer to join the Internal Communication and Creative Services section. This role is required to provide content advice and support, make improvements to content and maintain the content strategy for the department’s intranet (CONNECT). The Content Strategist and Designer works as part of a team that includes the Communication and Change branch (as business owner of the Intranet) and the Digital Workplace Services team in the IT Services Branch (provides publishing and technical support for the intranet).



This position is within the Internal Communication and Creative Services section, which delivers high-quality advice to support our business areas to meet their internal communication and graphic design needs.



What will you do?



The Content Strategist and Designer’s duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Maintaining and providing advice on the intranet information architecture.
  • Ensuring intranet content reflects the intranet content strategy, communication standards, governance and the content editor model and guidelines.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders and our information technology staff to ensure content meets the needs of the business and provides a consistent user experience.
  • Developing, maintaining, providing advice and monitoring compliance with intranet policies and standards to ensure effective and engaging intranet content that meets business needs.
  • Maintaining and improving the intranet content strategy and associated governance modules.
  • Facilitating regular content review and feedback processes for all intranet content.
  • Provide support, develop and deliver training and instructional guidance for intranet content editors, users and administrators.
  • Undertaking intranet content creation, editing and publishing, as required.


Who are we looking for?


As the Content Strategist and Designer, you will need to be flexible, resilient, build productive relationships with stakeholders and work autonomously under limited guidance. You should take responsibility for your work, follow through to deliver quality outcomes and have strong attention to detail.


The successful candidate will possess the following:
  • Demonstrated ability to structure, write and edit online content in plain English in accordance with the Australian Government Style Manual.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in intranet content management, including Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
  • Strong communication, collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines, problem solve and take initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, administer and deliver training.
  • Knowledge and experience in use of Microsoft (Word and Power Point) templates and styles.
  • Demonstrated ability using Share Point, IT Service Management, learning management and e Learn software.

Employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:


  • Citizenship: To be eligible for employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts applicants must be an Australian citizen at the time of submitting your application.
  • Health Assessment: the preferred candidate may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the department’s preferred medical provider.
  • Security Clearance: the successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at Baseline vetting. You must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information.
