The Role
The Assistant Director Secretariat and Program Management (EL 1) sits within the Program Management Office (PMO), supporting and enabling the achievement of Defence’s Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide (RCDVS) Implementation Program.
The role manages a small team to deliver, Secretariat functions for the PMO as well as highly effective reporting and analysis tools to track and manage implementation status and risks for the RCDVS Implementation Program Board.
The role will undertake regular engagement with senior members of both the RCDVS Implementation Taskforce Executive and wider Defence organisation to enable effective governance and oversight.
Responsibilities and duties include:
- Developing and implementing effective governance frameworks, processes, tools and templates, ensuring robust oversight and consistency empowering informed and strategic decision-making.
- Leading a small team to provide best practice, independent secretariat and advisory services for the RCDVS Implementation Program Board, including overseeing the planning and organising of meetings, drafting of agenda papers, preparation of minutes and correspondence, progressing and tracking of action items.
- Supporting transparent and effective communication across the RCDVS Implementation Program, enhancing stakeholder collaboration and alignment with strategic objectives.
- Developing and maintaining positive working relationships with team members and stakeholders.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic environment supporting the RCDVS Implementation Taskforce (the Taskforce), which has been established to lead Defence’s response to the RCDVS Final Report submitted in September 2024.
The Taskforce is responsible for providing governance, oversight and support for the implementation of Government agreed recommendations.
The Assistant Director Secretariat and Program Management (EL 1) performs a key function within the PMO and will support the management of the RCDVS Implementation Program.

- Highly developed knowledge of, and ability to advise on, best-practice governance principles and practices. Experience in secretariat or executive support roles will be advantageous.
- Experience developing and leading a supportive and high performing team in a fast-paced environment.
- Highly developed written and oral communication skills, including the ability to engage with stakeholders of various levels and backgrounds.
- Demonstrated strategic thinking, analytical and solutions-focused problem-solving skills.
- Have obtained, or have the ability to obtain, skills and/or qualifications in Program Management. Where these have not yet been obtained, the Taskforce will provide the successful candidate with the relevant training opportunities.
