TRU Waste Certification Specialist 1

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) - Carlsbad Operations is home to the Repository Science and Operations (RSO) Division. The RSO is dedicated to providing Mobile Loading Source Recovery Team (MLSRT) operations and certification support to the Off-site Source Recovery Program (OSRP). Our focus areas include operations, processing, inventory, and shipping activities for radioactive sealed sources.

The MLSRT Transportation Certification Specialist 1 will be an integral member of the team, responsible for loading and unloading operations and transportation certification of shipments of radioactive sealed sources from medical facilities, laboratories, and universities through the United States and internationally. The candidate will be trained and qualified to assist in ensuring compliant packaging assembly, payload assembly operations, quality control and/or transportation of radioactive sealed sources in accordance with relevant MLSRT Procedures. The position will require performance under incredible schedule pressure, and in audit environments. The successful candidate will be responsible for aiding OSRP and management on Laboratory policies/procedures relating to Type B packaging operation and leak testing.

This position requires the candidate to relocate to San Antonio, TX.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of operations, maintenance, conduct of operations, and quality assurance programs as applicable.
  • Basic skills in researching and recommending alternative solutions related to management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control and/or transportation of MLSRT Transportation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Position requires driving a pickup truck with a trailer.
  • Willingness to undertake heavy domestic travel, and possibly internationally travel.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance is required, which typically requires US Citizenship.
  • Willingness to relocate to San Antonio, TX.

Education/Experience Required: Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent.

Desired Skills:
  • Experience at a National Laboratory or a National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)/Department of Energy (DOE) facility or military installation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Laboratory organizational structure, policies, and procedures.
  • Experience hoisting and rigging, as well as crane/heavy equipment operations.
  • Familiarity working with NQA-1 or ISO Quality environments.

Work Schedule: Working overtime or irregular schedules is required. Occasionally working up to 65 hours per week is required including travel.

Work Environment: Heavy domestic and foreign travel is required. Work In a cold environment, working overtime or irregular schedule, in a very hot environment > 100 F, work near sources of ionizing radiation, headgear or head protection, safety glasses or eye protection, gloves or hand protection, safety shoes or protective footgear.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in San Antonio, TX. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
