Bachelor's or Master's degree in nursing or related field
Certification in pediatric nursing or school nursing
Experience working with children with special health needs
Bilingual in English and Spanish
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Required criminal history check and proof of citizenship or resident alien status in Puerto Rico
REPORTS TO: Lead Person / School Director / Chief Academic Officer MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities:
Conduct school health services, including annual physical examinations and test for hearing and vision
Assume responsibility for selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care
Report to parents/guardians, school personnel, physicians, clinics, the Child Study Team and other agencies of school medical matter
Maintain up to date cumulative health records on all students and staff
Observe students on a regular basis to detect health needs, and assist in communicable disease control
Assume authority, in the absence of a physician for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness; recording and reporting accidents
Establish proper relationships and rapport with the home, and visits student homes when necessary
Participate with school staff in developing and implementing total school health programs, including health teaching on a regular basis. The school nurse is the resource person in health education.
Provide in-services and workshops to faculty and staff to provide teachers on health matters particularly regarding screening for student health defects
Assist school personnel in establishing sanitary conditions in schools.
Remain abreast of current development in the health field through education and active participation in professional organizations.
Participate in in-service training programs.
Cooperate with community and county agencies and takes steps to interpret the health program to parents and lay public.
Formulate policies and procedures for health services
Participate as an active member of the Child Study Team in interpreting implications of significant medical findings
Disseminate Health Career information
Administer prescribed medication to students as per specified approval written policy
Collaborate with Centers of Excellence in programs to help students and families
Adapt school environment to meet the needs of the medically limited students and to promote a safe physical plant
Advise on modification of the educational program to meet health needs of individual students
Prepare and submit reports for Superintendent, Director and the State Board of Health
Authorize exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases
REQUIREMENTS:
Registered Nurse (RN) license in Puerto Rico
Experience working as a nurse in a school or pediatric setting
Strong assessment, diagnostic, and treatment skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to school health
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
Managing student health records and ensuring they are up-to-date
Developing and implementing health and wellness programs
Providing health education to students and staff
Collaborating with teachers, administrators, and parents to promote student health
Responding to health-related emergencies and providing appropriate care
Maintaining a clean and safe health office environment
Cooperates with personnel of community health and social welfare agencies.
Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the Lead Person / School Director / Chief Academic Officer.
