Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $3,400/Mon.
DUTIES: Assists Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU) Wildlife Technician in field operations and maintenance activities in Oahu’s Wildlife Sanctuaries, Public Hunting Areas, Game Management Areas and other areas with the Division of Forestry and Wildlife’s (DOFAW) wildlife program. Provides assistance with field operations related to the maintenance of: trails, roads, fences, water units, hunter check station, mammal and predator trapping, storage facilities and other program related infrastructure as needed. Assists with maintenance of program vehicles, machinery, and equipment, used to conduct field operations. Drives project vehicles to work sites, and works in and around helicopters. Assists in conducting surveys to document operations based on established protocols and directives. Documents daily field activities and provides situational updates to establish project record keeping and accurate reporting. Conducts activities related to maintenance of traps, surrounding areas and access routed, if needed. Conducts alien plant monitoring and control using mechanical and chemical techniques. Participates in outreach relations or volunteer trips on a monthly basis. Assists with overseeing and supporting program volunteers and interns.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
At least one (1) year of manual labor or semi-skilled work experience.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of Hawaiian biota, local game mammal and threats from alien species to native ecosystems.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Identification of game mammals. Identification of common native and introduced plants. Ability to read maps and aerial photographs. Ability to work with small-mechanized equipment in a safe manner (chainsaws, etc.). Ability to calculate herbicide formulations and follow label instructions of herbicides used in controlling incipient weeds. Ability to make necessary preparations to accomplish work assignments. Ability to work on small boats in coastal near-shore waters. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual or automatic transmission. Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must be able to complete chainsaw and basic helicopter training (A100) within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Must be able and willing to physically perform, efficiently and effectively under strenuous outdoor conditions (e.g., extreme weather, mosquitoes, steep terrain, etc.). Ability to hike up to ten (10) miles, and camp in remote areas and steep rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to five (5) consecutive days. Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Must be able to fly, via helicopter, to remote areas to conduct field operations. Must be able to swim in rough ocean conditions.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Computer literacy and familiarity with data analysis and presentation. Field experience in an active resource or management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i or similar. Experience working in Wildlife areas on Oahu.
