What You Will Do
Genomics and Bionanalytics group (B-GEN) in the Bioscience Division at Los Alamos National Lab is seeking a Research Tec 3 to join their team. This unique opportunity provides a wide variety of day-to-day responsibilities in a research environment. As a member of the sequencing team, you will primarily be performing quality control of extracted nucleic acids from a variety of types of clinical and environmental samples, preparing libraries for DNA sequencing and running different sequencing platforms (ie Illumina, Oxford Nanopore and Pacific Biosciences). In the lab, additional tasks will include maintaining the sequencing lab by cleaning, stocking and organizing. Outside of the lab, you will be responsible for carefully documenting sample information in the information management system and helping to inventory sample and prepared libraries. You will also assist with planning workshops, classes and preparing shipments and working directly with a wide breadth of foreign collaborators. Opportunities to travel to teach and work with our partner labs are available. Other projects and tasks will vary depending on your skills and our current needs.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Knowledge of Next Generation Sequencing.
- Experience with standard wet laboratory techniques including the use of PPE for sample handling
- Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting, with the ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context.
- Demonstrated ability to manage time and see tasks to completion.
- Demonstrated ability to produce quality work by applying attention to detail using detailed notes and writing protocols.
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance which typically requires US Citizenship.
Education: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices.
- Experience extracting nucleic acids from clinical and environmental samples and preparing DNA libraries.
- Experience with Next Generation Sequencing, specifically with the Illumina platforms.
- Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) or other digital information management systems.
- Experience with teaching or preparing training materials, including written materials, power point slides, videos, editing videos, packaging materials and shipping.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
