Museum and Archives Manager

Job Purpose:
The Museum and Archives Manager will oversee the cataloguing, digitization and storage of the historical artifacts and archival collection and will be responsible for the overall management, care, security, and preservation of the collection. Additionally, they will manage access to library services for community members, develop exhibits as requested for special events to educate the public on the history of the Tribe.
Primary Roles and Responsibilities:
Registrar/Collections
- Organize and catalog archival materials, including documents, photographs, audio-visual records, and artifacts.
- Digitize and implement preservation strategies to protect and maintain archival collections.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legal and ethical standards in archival practices.
- Maintain accurate records of archival holdings and usage.
- Prepare reports on archival holdings and usage.
- Respond to reference inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Conduct research on tribal history and culture as needed.
- Keep track of all museum objects and maintain records of ownership and borrowing.
- Carefully watch the safety and condition of objects on display.
- Manage requests for rights and reproduction of images.
- Manage the museum’s library of books and historical archives (image library, photography of objects, and rights and reproductions).
Museum Education
- Organize educational programs, workshops, and exhibitions to engage the community in the tribe’s history and culture.
- Collaborate with tribal leadership and cultural committees to promote awareness and appreciation of the archives.
- Facilitate training sessions for tribal members on the use of archival resources.
- Manage access to materials for community members.
- Oversee volunteers (archives, library, etc.).
Exhibit Preparation
- Work with Chief and Tribal Heritage Preservation Officer to develop, construct, and arrange exhibits.
- Carefully handles objects.
Key Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in Archival Science, Library Science, History, Anthropology, or a related field.
- Experience in archival management, preservation, or related areas.
- Proficiency in Past Perfect software.
- Experience working with Native American tribes or familiarity with tribal history, culture, and issues relevant to Native American communities.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written communication, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and individuals.
Employment Details:
Location: This position will be in-person at the tribal center. The Library/Archives Manager will work in an office environment and may need to handle archival materials, which can include lifting and moving boxes.
Compensation: This is a three-year, ~25-30 hour/week grant funded position. Pay is commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical, vision, dental, and retirement. Continuation of employment is contingent on funding.
Training: The Museum and Archives Manager will be required to attend a 3-Week Collections Management Training Course at West Chester University. All expenses will be covered.
