METER READER ASSISTANT

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for assisting in the reading of utility meters.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Walk or drive a vehicle along established routes to locate the customers' meters and take accurate readings from them.
  • Ensure data is uploaded daily to system of record for dispatch routine pickup.
  • Perform general maintenance of water meter boxes which may include cleaning dirt and debris from boxes, removal of vegetation to gain access for reading, and inspecting utility meters to ensure they function correctly.
  • Operates a two-way radio to communicate with other personnel. Report via two-way radio any problems such as damaged boxes or lids, obstructions to meter access, water in meter box, water leaks or tampering which would prevent timely or accurate readings
  • Ensure delivery of customer notices as needed.
  • Clean and maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Record the meter reading accurately with the figures, customer account number, and location identification number of the meter.
  • Provide excellent customer service, greet customers and properly provide referral resources for additional questions they may receive.
  • Work in line with health and safety guidelines.
  • Assist meter readers as needed related duties as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Meter Reading experience is preferred but not required.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to danger from vicious dogs or poisonous insects.
  • Ability to enter/exit work vehicle multiple times daily.
  • Must have good attendance and timeliness work history.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work with little supervision.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of water meter reading.
  • Knowledge of City streets.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations
  • Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.
  • Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships.
  • Skill in performing mathematical calculations.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Strong directional skills with knowledge to read and understand maps via GPS instruments and websites
  • Competent in the use of handheld / tablet devices for meter reading
  • Verbal and written communication skills allowing for comfortable interaction with coworkers and customers
  • Skilled in analyzing problems and collaborating on viable solutions
  • Knowledge of safe work practices (OSHA, city safety policies and procedures)
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
  • None
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion, sitting, standing, and walking. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices, such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
