Position Overview
The Rare Disease Laboratory Genetic Counselor II is responsible for handling clinical, technical, and scientific inquiries from internal and external clients, which may include both healthcare providers and patients. They are responsible for understanding the workflow and entire testing process and write, modify, and recommend department standard operating procedures (SOPs). They will triage and solve problems within the company. They will be relied upon to follow all department protocols and to identify and report problems or issues to departmental leadership. This position will report to the Director of Genetic Counseling.
You will be required to work Monday to Friday, 9:30am - 6:00pm CST and/or 10:00am - 6:30pm CST.
Essential Duties
Include, but are not limited to, the following:

For Hereditary Cancer counseling:
- Provide genetic education to patients who are interested in understanding more information about hereditary cancer pre- and post-test.
- Monitor medical policies and assist with the completion of prior authorizations to ensure patients have access to genetic testing with minimal out-of-pocket exposure.

For both types of counseling:
- Investigate and resolve issues related to provider orders or servicing for the sales team, providers, or other internal customers.
- Provide clinical expertise to a variety of stakeholders regarding accessioning inquiries, test order modifications, turnaround time and delayed results questions, technical and scientific inquiries, and results interpretation.
- Critically evaluate and remain current on national genetic testing and management guidelines.
- Support healthcare providers in understanding and communicating elements of genetic risk assessment, informed decision-making, and results communication in the context of genetic test offerings.
- Support content creation of reports, publications and training materials.
- Provide insight into the clinical utility of genetic testing and educational formats to improve patient outcomes.
- Identify and resolve escalated customer complaints, escalating high priority issues to leadership.
- Assist with training and mentorship of genetic counseling assistants.
- Collaborate with molecular geneticists and other departments to provide high quality, timely test results and to achieve other organizational goals and objectives.
- Perform specialized tasks beyond standard genetic counselor duties as assigned.
- General understanding of personalized health care and the rapidly changing practices of clinical genetics, laboratory medicine, and informatics.
- Ability to tailor, translate, and communicate complex information in a simple, relevant way to a broad range of audiences.

- Local and overnight travel may be required to meet with team, clients and/or attend conferences.
- Supports the genetic counseling team in issue resolution and process improvement.
- Maintain ethical standards in interactions with clients, co-workers, and other health care professionals.
- Respond to technical questions of genetic counseling assistants and others in Exact Sciences’ Customer Service acting as the primary contact for staff for technical and administrative problem solving.
- Participate in continuing education and staff meetings and take ownership of own professional development.
- Assist with knowledge transfer of changes and additions to customer service procedures, processes, and policies.
- Contribute to design, research, review and writing of department procedures.
- Remain informed of procedure updates and changes and ensures employees demonstrate knowledge and competency regarding changes.
- Apply step by step thinking, problem solving and critical thinking patterns.
- Demonstrate willingness to cooperate with team members and with cross-functional groups to accomplish world class customer service.
- Demonstrate professional demeanor, in personal appearance and behavior, in all work-related interactions inside and outside of the laboratory.
- Possess a positive attitude with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact and build strong working relationships with peers at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to triage and solve problems in all areas of the department.
- Write, modify, and recommend department standard operating procedures (SOPs) in order to maintain a high level of quality and assist with ensuring department SOPs are followed.
- Research and make recommendations regarding workflow, productivity, and system improvements to increase quality and efficiency.
- Manage departmental projects.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s Degree Genetic Counseling.

For work in Rare Disease Genetic Counseling:
- 2-4 years genetic counseling experience in clinical &/or laboratory setting focusing on rare disease space.

For work in Hereditary Cancer Genetic Counseling:
- 2-4 years genetic counseling experience in clinical &/or laboratory setting focusing on hereditary cancer testing.
- ABGC/CCGC Board Certified, and state licensure as applicable
- Deep and broad knowledge of human genetics, including national genetic testing and management guidelines.
- Demonstrated skill in setting priorities and multi-tasking.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with telehealth services.

Salary Range:
$77,000.00 - $121,000.00
The annual base salary shown is a national range for this position on a full-time basis and may differ by hiring location. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
