GENERAL PURPOSE: Performs a variety of ground keeping and general maintenance functions for the Minot Park District’s Horticulture and Maintenance Departments. This is a skilled and technical position. NATURE OF WORK: This is technical and lead work in the care and maintenance of parks and other grounds, ice rinks, playing fields and greenhouse operations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Horticulturist. The employee provides training and direction to seasonal employees. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in the classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Assists in Planning, organizing, coordinating schedules and assigning work to crews of seasonal employees for mowing, maintaining grounds in parks, athletic fields, greenhouse operations, and inspecting completed work.
Assist Horticulturalist in all departmental operations and perform duties of Horticulturist a/or Lead Groundskeeper in their absence.
Assists in maintaining parks and other grounds by mowing, watering, fertilizing, checking for disease and insect damage, and maintaining flower beds.
Assists in the operation and maintaining irrigation system; sets clocks for pump and sprinklers; regulates valves, checks for leaks, adjust pressure, water as needed.
Assists in performing preventive maintenance and making minor repairs on mowing, spraying and other equipment.
Assist in maintaining the district’s park, zoo grounds and athletic complexes in a safe, clean and visually appealing manner for enjoyment by the public.
Applies fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and other chemical agents to assigned park grounds.
Assist in watering and mowing as needed of assigned park grounds.
Assist as needed with shelter cleaning, trash removal and scheduling of special events year around.
Assist in fall cleanup including raking and leaf removal of assigned park grounds.
Assist the Horticulturist in greenhouse management which may include planting, watering, insect control and maintenance of greenhouses.
Assists with general building, facility maintenance, forestry or other departments as assigned.
Assists in all sports fields operations which may include ground maintenance, fertilizer and chemical applications, aeration, watering and directions to Field Managers.
Assist in winter activities, snow removal and ice rink maintenance. Knowledge of winter equipment.
Assist the maintenance in the winter months in all areas that are needed.
Education and Experience:
Preferred 2-4 year Horticulture related degree or worked in the Horticulture or Maintenance fields for 2 years.
Experience in grounds keeping activities, including the use of pesticides and lead or supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Other position knowledge/requirements:
Grounds maintenance equipment and practices.
Pesticide use and application techniques.
Standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and equipment related to ground maintenance.
Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including bending, stooping, reaching and lifting heavy objects 50lbs and heavier.
Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a Pesticides License or Certification within six months of hire.
North Dakota Driver’s License-CDL plus is preferred or willing to work towards it.
Preemployment background check and drug screening required
