JOB TITLE: Histology Laboratory Technician
DEPARTMENT: Histology
REPORTS TO: CEO and COO

EXPOSURE: Category 1 - Employees in category 1 positions perform tasks that routinely involve exposure or potential exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
POSITION SUMMARY
Histology Technician will evaluate and perform established criteria in conformance with state and federal regulatory guidelines.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling, processing, and maintaining records of patient test results.
Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures with supervision.
Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and maintenance performed.
Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, or director.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specification.
Performs equipment verifications under the supervision of certified technologist.
Participates in regulatory agency inspection readiness and onsite inspections.
Communicates effectively and timely as needed to co-workers, management, medical directors, and other divisions.
Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Education / Certifications
Required:
Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited histotechnician program or HT/HTL registration with ASCP, with relevant experience.
Associates Degree in laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or
At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that include: 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 hours of chemistry; 6 hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology
Experience / Abilities:
Perform independently routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of surgical specimens for Histologic processing, according to policies and procedures.
Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling.
Maintain the integrity of the specimen and patient identification.
Capable of grossing specimens under direct and/or indirect supervision, as applicable to training and experience.
Ability to perform fundamental tasks on a computer including laboratory information system - LIS.
Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills

Willingness to maintain confidential information
Ability to follow SOP, perform routine QC and troubleshooting of histology related instrument/equipment
Ability to facilitate CLIA inspection with help of supervisor and/or medical director
