Head of Security - Energy Industry

Position Summary
A growing energy company seeks a full-time Head of Security that will lead and oversee all security operations, ensuring the safety of personnel, assets, and infrastructure. The role involves developing and implementing comprehensive security strategies, protocols, and procedures to mitigate risks, prevent theft, and respond to emergencies. This position requires strong leadership, crisis management, and surveillance oversight. An ex-military background with corporate security experience is preferred, given the need for a strategic and disciplined approach to security in a high-stakes industrial environment for an energy company.
Job Requirements:
  • Military background (e.g., officer or non-commissioned officer) with honorable discharge, preferred. Special forces or other high-level military professional also preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in security management or law enforcement, with at least 5 years in a corporate/industrial security role.
  • Experience managing security operations in high-risk environments (e.g., mining, energy, or similar industries).
  • Proficiency in risk assessment, emergency response planning, and security protocols.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local security regulations applicable to mining.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with security technologies (e.g., CCTV, access control systems, and intrusion detection systems).
  • Ability to work closely with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency services.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Physical Security Professional (PSP)) are a plus.
  • Must have a valid, unencumbered driver's license. Experience with driving as part of security detail is also preferred.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve the mine's security strategy to safeguard personnel, property, and assets.
  • Oversee day-to-day security operations, including surveillance, access control, and perimeter security.
  • Manage and lead the mine’s security team, providing training, support, and guidance.
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities and implement corrective measures.
  • Ensure compliance with all security-related regulations and mine safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure alignment between security measures and operational needs.
  • Respond to security incidents, managing crisis situations and coordinating with local law enforcement as needed.
  • Monitor and report on security performance, incidents, and corrective actions.
  • Implement and manage emergency evacuation and response procedures.
  • Liaise with local law enforcement, regulatory agencies, and other security agencies to maintain communication and cooperation.
  • Regularly audit and assess security measures, making recommendations for improvements.
  • Manage budgets and procurement related to security equipment and personnel.
  • Perform other security duties as may be assigned by the COO or their designees. This may require driving security detail for team members and others as needed.
  • Must be willing to travel off site to different locations as needed or required.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to patrol mine premises, including underground and surface operations.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods, including in rugged or uneven terrain.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations, including the need to run or navigate through obstacles.
  • Must be able to operate in extreme weather conditions and tolerate noise, dust, and vibration typical in mining environments.
  • Must be able to operate a vehicle appropriately.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Security Management: In-depth understanding of security systems, surveillance, and access control specific to industrial or mining settings.
  • Crisis Management: Ability to make quick, sound decisions in emergency situations and lead a team effectively under pressure.
  • Risk Assessment: Strong ability to assess risks and identify vulnerabilities, creating effective solutions to mitigate security threats.
  • Leadership: Excellent leadership and team management skills, capable of leading a team of security professionals.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient with security technologies, including surveillance systems, intrusion detection, and access controls.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, capable of preparing detailed security reports and coordinating with other departments and external agencies.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of security laws, mining regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Problem-Solving: Analytical thinking to address potential security threats and develop preventive strategies.
  • Attention to Detail: Keen observational skills to monitor and assess security measures and incident reports.

This is salaried exempt position with annual salary commensurate with experience level and credentials.
