Position: Director of Harriman Basecamp

Harriman Basecamp and the Mc Kenna Expeditionary Team is a next generation, forward oriented initiative, seeking a dynamic leader. The programs engage boys and young men in a range of teamwork focused learning opportunities. We meet boys and young where they are and, through a youth centered experiential learning lens, help them develop environmental awareness, wilderness skills, teamwork, connection, and a spirit of adventure. Harriman Basecamp exemplifies a commitment to sustainability and the diverse, equitable, and inclusionary use of public space.
Reporting to the Executive Director and with support from the Chief of Staff, the Director will operate with a high degree of independence and creativity, within a defined set of co-created core principles and expected outcomes. The Director will have a team of seasonal staff at Harriman Basecamp and will help clubhouse professional and frontline staff achieve a range of defined goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the Harriman Basecamp and Mc Kenna Expeditionary Team, and provide guidance to clubhouse based environmental and nature initiatives.
- Manage administration, budgeting, financial oversight, risk management, logistics, staff recruitment, training, and data collection.
- Manage the property, permits, and equipment at Harriman Base Camp.
- Provide clubhouse staff programs curriculum and resources. .
- Develop and execute a robust Mc Kenna Expeditionary Team program for teens that includes hiking, camping, leadership training, and internship opportunities.
- Develop and implement a focus on sustainability, recycling, conservation, and environmental awareness at basecamp.
- Liaise with schools, community leaders, and partners to promote Harriman Basecamp.
- Collaborate with BCNY Communications and Development teams to promote Harriman Basecamp programs.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to youth development, social emotional learning through a restorative lens, experiential learning, and racial justice.
- Successful experience working with people of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs.
- Strong communication skills
- Camp management and outdoor leadership experience.
- Interest in environmental science, nature, and a commitment to Leave No Trace.
- Ability to move around steep or uneven terrain, work in outdoor weather conditions, while overseeing and ensuring the safety.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Valid driver’s license required and wilderness first aid and credentials
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree strongly preferred, in Public Administration, Educational Leadership, Youth Development, Social Work, or Management with a minimum of five to seven years senior level experience in a non-profit organization; Experience successfully supervising staff; Experience working with boys and young men in an urban setting; a sound understanding of the social and cultural issues facing urban youth and families; Demonstrated experience working with a broad constituency such as parents, alumni and community groups and articulating leadership and management philosophy; Experience managing partnerships, community, school engagement, and facilities in a shared space capacity; Excellent supervision, management, and leadership skills, including knowledge of mentoring, evaluating, and inspiring staff.
