Job Title: Patient Care Technician Function: The PCT is responsible for providing patients with safe and effective delivery of care under the supervision of a Licensed Nurse. Accountability: Nurse and Manager Qualifications: · High school graduate or equivalent medical background preferred. · Minimum of one year and/or formal dialysis training. · Satisfactory professional references. · Demonstrate a working knowledge of the English language and communicate verbally and in writing. · Maintains the state mandated competency in Basic Cardiac Life Support, HIV basic course and yearly updates. · PCTs are required to be certified by a national certification organization within 18 months of employment or if they are currently employed, within 18 months of October 14, 2008. Patient Care Responsibilities: 1. Provide safe, effective delivery of patient care in compliance with standards outlined in the facility procedure manual, as well as regulations set forth by the facility, state, and federal agencies. Under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. 2. Responsible for the delivery of this care to assigned patients. 3. Provide treatment technique for assigned patients as prescribed. This includes all aspects of the hemodialysis procedure. 4. Responsible for accurate documentation of information related to the patient treatment. This information is documented by the technician in the appropriate patient record. 5. Participates as a multidisciplinary team member and communicates patient’s needs to ancillary departments as identified. 6. Report any significant information or change in patient condition to the Charge Nurse. 7. Familiarity with all emergency operational procedures. 8. Enters signature and credentials legibly on all charting per facility guideline. 9. Follows the facility policies for Safety and Emergency Procedures. 10. Maintains the state mandated competency in Basic Cardiac Life Support per American Heart Association, HIV basic course and yearly updates. 11. Responsible for the preparation of “dry acid” and bicarb dialysate solutions and prepare these solutions in adequate amounts for daily use. Maintain quality control standards and records of these solutions. 12. Performs safety checks for preparation of dialysate and for patient treatment. Technical Responsibilities Able to safely operate all dialysis related equipment. Able to provide minor trouble shooting when necessary. Familiarity with all emergency equipment and ability to operate the equipment efficiency. Staff related Responsibilities 1. Required to attend staff meeting as scheduled. 2. Assist in patient care plan meetings when appropriate. 3. Acquire information and knowledge in the latest developments of dialysis technique by participating in scheduled in-service classes. 4. Act as a resource person for other staff members. 5. Participate in staff training and orientation as assigned under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and Medical Director.
