Clinical Laboratory Scientist

Job Summary:
This position is responsible for performing chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases for Oyate Health Center (OHC) patients.
Essential Functions:
  • Responsible as lead tech in one or more of the following specialties: microbiology, chemistry, hematology, serology, and urinalysis. Works as generalist in these areas as well as phlebotomy when workload and staffing require it.
  • Conducts analyses of body fluids and/or tissue to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.
  • Prepares reagents and primary reference materials.
  • Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of non-routine and specialized test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols.
  • Recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunctions; locates and implements corrections.
  • Obtains analytical data, converts to proper units for reporting if necessary; and correlates data to verify results.
  • Writes laboratory reports and provides to appropriate individuals.
  • Writes, reviews and edits polices.
  • Performs maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, and quality control on laboratory instrumentation.
  • Orders reagents, supplies and manages inventory within their specific department.
  • As Lead Tech, trains lab staff in this department as necessary. Develops competencies for all staff who perform testing
  • Prints and evaluates monthly quality control. Initiates corrective actions when necessary.
  • Recommends and evaluates new procedures and instrumentation.
  • Tracks data for quality measures as required for Lab QAPI plan.
  • Performs testing in all areas of the lab and evaluates and reports results.
  • Rotates holidays and occasional weekends.
  • Performs manual differentials.
  • Engages in medical research under direction of Medical Technologist Supervisor.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure.
  • Verifies instrument functioning by checking and calibrating specific lab instruments and documents data.
  • Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment; identifies the cause of common problems and makes simple repairs.
  • Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents and products. Maintains proper records for quality controls reports.
  • Recommends and evaluates new procedures and instrumentation.
  • Reviews and reports patient results in laboratory information system/EHR.
  • May instruct other laboratory scientists, medical technicians, nurses and others in techniques, equipment use, test slip requirement, etc.
  • Trains and supervises students.
  • Maintain effective, collaborative interdepartmental and external relations.
  • Must comply with federal laws and regulations as required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Supervisory Controls
The supervisor makes assignments by defining objectives, priorities, and deadlines and assists the employee with unusual situations that do not have clear precedents. The employee plans and carries out the successive steps and handles problems and deviations in the work assignments in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, scope of license/certification, or accepted practices in the occupation. Completed work is usually evaluated for technical soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements. The methods used in arriving at the end results are not usually reviewed in detail.
Guidelines
There are established procedures for doing the work and a number of specific guidelines are available as a resource. The employee may be required to use judgment in locating and selecting the most appropriate guidelines, references, and procedures for application and in making minor deviations to adapt the guidelines to specific cases. The employee may also determine which of several established alternatives to use. Situations to which the existing guidelines cannot be applied or significant proposed deviations from the guidelines are referred to the supervisor.
Guidelines include GPTCHB, OHC, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, and deviations must be authorized by the supervisor.
Complexity/Scope of Work
The work typically includes varied duties that require many different and unrelated processes and methods, such as those relating to well established aspects of an administrative or professional field. Decisions regarding what needs to be done include the assessment of unusual circumstances, variations in approach, and incomplete or conflicting data. Positions with this level of complexity include clinical professional positions, advanced professionals, and management positions.
The work involves establishing criteria; formulating projects; assessing program effectiveness; or investigating or analyzing a variety of unusual conditions, problems, or questions. The work product or service affects a wide range of organizational activities, major financial activitiesor the operation of other programs divisions of the organization. This level of scope and effect is typically representative of senior management, specialized clinical and technical professional positions within the organization.
Contacts
The personal contacts are with employees within the department, office, project, or work unit, and in related or support units. The contacts are with other employees, patients and other customers, and members of the general public in very highly structured situations.
The purpose is to obtain, clarify, or give facts or information regardless of the nature of those facts; i.e., the facts or information may range from easily understood to highly technical.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. The employee must be able to read, write, speak and hear.
The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility
This is a non-supervisory position that may provide functional direction, guidance and instruction to other employees when necessary. This position possess authority to assign, coordinate, and review quality and quantity of work of other employees. Instructs employees in specific techniques or technical methods for accomplishing work assignments. The employee may perform the same type of work as other employees, but may be responsible for performance of the more technically difficult, controversial, or sensitive work assigned to the unit or group.
Education/Experience/Certificates/Credentials
  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Valid certification by a recognized certifying agency (ASCP, AMT).
  • Valid licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS/MT) by any U.S. State or Territory.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required or must be obtained within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal and background check, and a pre-employment drug screen.
