Boiler Tech 4 is a mid-level position in the Boiler Tech Program. The Program is designated as a Specialized Training Program to develop highly skilled employees responsible for factory power generation through the safe and efficient operation of boiler and turbine equipment. The Boiler Tech Program operates under the provisions set forth in section 5.21 of the collective bargaining agreement. To be selected for entry into the Program, individuals must meet pre-hire qualifications and be the most qualified applicant.
PRE-HIRE QUALIFICATIONS: pre-requisites for entry into Boiler Tech Program
High School Diploma or GED certificate is required.
Must pass pre-hire mechanical aptitude test (64% or 23 out of 36 correct), and Basic Skills Tests: Reading (63% or 10 out of 16 correct) and Arithmetic (64% or 9 out of 14 correct)
Individuals are required to submit to and successfully pass a Safety Screen that evaluates their ability to safely execute duties and tasks of this position.
Must be able to reference, read and understand how to use MSDS information.
Must be able to obtain forklift certification.
To the extent any employee is designated or becomes year-round, and is assigned to inter-campaign maintenance, he or she will be expected to obtain the minimum required tools for inter-campaign.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
As a Boiler Technician 6, Major Duties Include:
Cleaning in the boiler house, & coal handling areas
Operates & troubleshoots ash removal equipment
Operates & troubleshoots soot blowing equipment
On the job study time
Other duties as assigned
Works overtime as required
Completes SOP reading assignments as scheduled
Employees must successfully meet requirements below to advance to BT 5 as follows:
MN Special Exam Prep (class)
Module 1, 2, & 4- boiler Word manuals, complete the book activities to mastery level
Complete walkthrough checklist from Word manuals
Acquire a MN Special boiler license (maintains the license until the next higher license is acquired)
Proficiency in all Boiler Tech 6 duties
Adheres to all Company safety policies and performs all work with a “my safety first” approach
Probationary Period: Must meet requirements for promotion to boiler tech 5 within 8 months to continue in the boiler tech program
Boiler Technician 5, Major Duties Include:
MN Boiler Special license required
Successfully performs all tasks of a Boiler Tech 6, other duties as assigned.
In addition to Boiler Tech 6 duties, the Boiler Tech 5 continues their studies toward progression to Boiler Tech 4 and accumulates time on his/her license in preparation to write the next boiler license exam
Operates & troubleshoots coal handling equipment
Completes SOP reading assignments as scheduled
Severe weather-related issues such as lancing coal pits & coal stoppage issues throughout the coal system
On the job training in all boiler house duties as assigned
Works overtime as required
Must successfully meet requirements below to advance to BT 4 as follows:
All lower Boiler Tech requirements have been successfully completed.
Complete word modules 3, 6, & 7, complete the book activities to mastery level
2A Exam Prep Class (if needed, not mandatory to take the class)
Nalco Boiler Water Class
LIMS Training – Entering Data into the Lab Information Management System
Use of Steam Process Training
Proficiency in all Boiler Tech 5 duties
Acquire a MN 2-A Boiler license (maintains the license until the next higher license is acquired)
Adheres to all Company safety policies and performs all work with a “my safety first” approach
Probationary Period: Must meet requirements for promotion to BT 4 within 18 months to continue in the program
Boiler Technician 4, Major Duties Include:
Boiler operator license required, at minimum, a MN Boiler 2-A license
Performs All duties of Boiler Tech 5 & 6 levels to a level acceptable to the PG Supervisor
Operates the DCS to a level acceptable to the PG Supervisor
Operates the reducing stations to a level acceptable to the PG Supervisor
Performs all water tests and properly documents the results according to ACSC guidelines and to a level acceptable to the PG Supervisor
