    Supervisory Aide II-IV/Autism Mentor
    Location: Weir High School
    Time: 7:15am - 2:15pm
    Hours: 7

    POSITION: Supervisory Aide II/IV-Autism Mentor

    CHARACTERISTICS OF POSITION: Under immediate supervision performs routine duties connected with the program of working with teachers and children.

    QUALIFICATIONS: The successful applicant must have the mandated standards and requirements for the Autism Mentor classification established by the WV Department of Education.

    1. Meet the qualifications of Aide III as delineated in WV Code 18A-4-8.
    Aide III means those personnel selected and trained for teacher aide classifications such as monitor aide, clerical aide, classroom aide or general aide, and who hold a high school diploma or a general educational certificate, and have completed six semester hours of college credit at an institution of higher education or are employed as an aide in a special education program and; have one year’s experience as an aide in special education. The local school district is responsible for verifying this standard.
    • Successful completion of a staff development program related to autism as determined by the WV Department of Education. To become an Autism Mentor, an aide must earn, at a minimum, 15 points for participation in relevant staff development, which must include an overview of autism and positive behavior support strategies. Documentation of the individual’s number of earned points must be on file in the Office of Special Education at the Department.

    3. Two years of successful experience working with autistic students.
    The local school district is responsible for verifying these standards.
    • Physical ability and stamina necessary to complete all job tasks, including
    tasks related to ensuring student safety. The local school district is responsible for verifying this standard.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
    • Supervision of restrooms prior to lunch.
    • Supervision of lunch rooms.
    • Supervision of playground.
    • Supervision of indoor activities in lieu of playground on days of inclement weather.
    • Supervising or assisting with the loading or unloading of buses (where needed).
    • Cooperate with the principal and teachers in any way necessary to enhance the overall learning situation.
    • May assist handicapped students in the classroom, restroom, or playground and moving in and out of the building.
    • Also, diaper changing, feeding, lifting and potty training.
    • Any other duty as assigned by the supervisor.
    • May be assigned to supervise students being transported on a school bus, including riding the school bus when required.
    • To follow county policy and procedures.
    • To maintain positive work habits and attitudes.
    • To perform duties efficiently and productively.
    • To maintain and/or upgrade skills.
    • To promote positive public communications.
    • To maintain professional appearance.
    • Lifting students with special needs is required – approximately 30 to 100 pounds.
    • Moving a minimum of 50 lbs.
    • Pushing and pulling a minimum of 50 lbs. when needed for students with special needs. (wheelchair)
    • Climb stairs on bus/in schools.
    • Bending/kneeling.
    • Special Ed - Aquatic water program if special needs students are involved.
    • If special needs student(s) requires any HEALTH PROCEDURES - aide is required to perform these duties to any special education student at that location.
    • Tracking student projects and collecting data
    • CPR certification required.
    • Safety Care training provided and required (may be held after school hours).

    STATE DESCRIPTION:

    Aide I – Means those personnel selected and trained for teacher-aide classifications such as monitor aide, clerical aide, classroom aide or general aides.

    Aide II – Means those personnel referred to in the Aide I classification who have completed a training program approved by the state board of education, or who hold a high school diploma or have received a general educational development certificate. Only personnel classified in an Aide II class title shall be employed an aide in any special education program.

    Aide III – Means those personnel referred to in the Aide I classification who hold a high school diploma or a general educational development certificate, and have completed six semester hours of college credit at an institution of higher education or are employed as an aide in a special education program and have one year’s experience as an aide in special education.

    Aide IV – Means personnel referred to in the Aide I classification who hold a high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and who have completed eighteen hours of state board approved college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education, or who have completed fifteen hours of state board-approved college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education and successfully completed an in-service training program determined by the state board to be the equivalent of three hours of college credit.

    EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated twice a year for employees with a continuing contract and three times a year for employees with a probationary contract. This is in accordance with provisions of the Hancock County Board of Education Policy on Evaluation of Service Personnel.
