The Role
The Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University is seeking to appoint to the post of Lecturer in International Security (Teaching and Scholarship). The successful candidate will have completed/be nearing completion of a Ph D (or equivalent qualification) in the broad area of International Security, will have experience of teaching in a university environment, and will be able to work as part of a dynamic and intellectually vibrant team, as well as independently.
The successful candidate will contribute to our undergraduate teaching activities in international security. In particular, they will be able to convene and teach a module on War Crimes, contribute to teaching on a terrorism and counterterrorism module, and potentially contribute to other modules related to War, Strategy and Security. The successful candidate will also contribute as necessary to other teaching requirements, and contribute to the wider activities of the department, including dissertation supervision, personal tutoring, and general administrative duties.
This is a six-month fixed term appointment to begin on 1 January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The Department of International Politics has an international reputation as a centre of excellence for research and teaching. We have a very strong research environment and have consistently secured excellent results in the National Student Survey. This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
  • To plan, manage, and deliver excellent teaching using appropriate teaching materials, methods and approaches.
  • To convene and teach the undergraduate Second/Third Year optional module IQ2/35720 War Crimes and contribute to teaching on the undergraduate Second/Third Year optional module IP2/34520 Terrorism and Counterterrorism in the Modern World.
  • To be committed to your own professional development through the effective use of the University’s Effective Contribution Scheme.

  • Any other reasonable duties requested commensurate with the grade of this role.
  • To contribute as appropriate to teaching on other undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the Department.

  • To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required
Essential
  • A Ph D, or near completion, or equivalent qualification, in the broad area of international security.
  • Experience of teaching within one or more of the areas of international security, international relations, international history, in Higher Education.
  • A broad and integrated understanding of international security in the 20th and 21st Century.
  • The ability to make a broad and flexible contribution to teaching across the curriculum at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • The ability to work in a team and make a positive all-round contribution to a dynamic department.
  • An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually.
Desirable
  • A teaching qualification (or working towards one).
  • Experience of convening undergraduate modules and research-led teaching.
  • Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level B2. *
