Crossroads Community Hub is a local charity, seeking a Coordinator to support community activities based from our purpose-built community facility, Ayrshire Food Hub. The Hub also houses a café, two kitchens and event space and is home to Ayrshire’s only community-run farm shop. The post is based at the Hub and is funded by the National Lottery Cost of Living Support Fund. Our Aims: Through our outreach work we aim to tackle food insecurity and promote health and well-being for all. This funding will be used to support people in the Crossroads locality to overcome challenges associated with the cost-of-living crisis. The project will deliver cookery classes focused on creating budget, energy-efficient meals; expand Fare Share food distribution within the area and support locals to access wider supports, advice and information to manage cost-of-living concerns. Job Role: You will be based at our purpose-built community facility in a key role, working with an enthusiastic Board of Trustees to set up and deliver activities, which will address cost of living challenges, both from our hub at Crossroads and in the small towns and villages in the 6 surrounding rural parishes. The Person: You will be a people person with excellent organisational skills, driven to help support the vision of the organisation by bringing creative and innovative ideas on making savings using food to benefit health and wellbeing in your local community. A trained and experienced cook with a background of group work, you will be our charity’s community food champion addressing the challenges that people face through the increasing cost of living. You will have extensive knowledge and skills in budget cooking, be able work on your own initiative and prioritise work instrumental to the overall success of the project. The post involves a significant amount of driving, and applicants should therefore be both competent and confident in their ability to drive, particularly on rural roads. Specific Responsibilities:
Plan and publicise a 10 week programme of innovative budget cookery classes through engagement with our partners in community food larders
Develop costed recipes using simple ingredients which promote general health and wellbeing and include allergen free adaptations
With the help of a volunteer, deliver a weekly series of cookery classes, enabling participants to develop new skills and confidence in a range of low cost cooking methods and meal preparation.
Coordinate and extend the distribution of emergency meals and Fare Share foods ensuring Haccp food safe standards are maintained
Analyse and evaluate all community work communicating plans and outcomes to the Board of Trustees
Provide regular written reports on grant expenditure and outcomes for funders
Actively work with the Board to secure external funding
Signpost participants to resources giving additional financial and health guidance
Person Specification Essential:
A professional cook who can work independently and come up with simple nutritious recipes.
REHIS/equivalent certificate in elementary food hygiene and track record of compliance
Experience of work with local authority and third sector organisations
Well-developed group skills
Experience of community engagement and consultation
Creativity and innovation in developing budget recipes and cookery classes
Management of volunteers
Excellent communication, and people skills including report writing.
Effective time management, administration and IT skills.
Ability to work unsupervised, meet deadlines, prioritise and problem solve
Able to work flexible hours in line with the requirements of the service
Car and full driving licence
Desirable:
Qualified to level 5 or above in professional cookery and hospitality
Able to work on their own initiative demonstrating foresight and creative thinking
