Au Pair for Autistic Boy – Somerset West

We are seeking a confident, playful and energetic live-out au pair to join a family and support a wonderful autistic, non speaking, 5-year-old boy. The ideal candidate should be kind, patient and compassionate. They should enjoy engaging in DIR floor-time, physical play and elemental play as well as outdoor activities like swimming and walks within the local area. They should love finding fun and creative ways to connect with and stimulate his growing mind.
Main Purpose of the job:
To be a “helping hand” for their unique and specific support needs, giving them the necessary guidance and support to thrive. A special interest and passion in neurodiversity and being a secure, long-term source of support are of the utmost importance.
The candidate will be trained by the NDC Facilitation Academy and thereafter receive personalised support from a registered counsellor for up to 4-6 weeks, working in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team based at the Neurodiversity Centre.
Job Objectives:
  • Becoming a core member of the multi-disciplinary team to support his individual needs if and when needed.
  • Providing companionship and emotional support for him at home.
  • Support and scaffolding for his regulation needs (lessening any uncertainty and anxiety).
  • To carry out duties such as school pick-ups, outings, appointments, facilitating healthy meal and snack times, changing nappies and eventually providing toileting support.
  • Supporting the understanding of his individual difference sensory profile, and executive functioning (i.e. assisting with creating a routine with the use of visual aids).
  • Facilitating and planning creative educational activities using a child-led approach.
General Requirements:
  • A valid driver’s license – Essential.
  • Fluent in English– Essential.
Job-Related work experience:
  • Previous experience in a role supporting neurodivergent children - Essential.
  • Previous experience working with younger children under 6 years old - Essential.
  • Previous experience in teaching/tutoring - Preferred.
Job-Related Knowledge:
  • Familiarity and knowledge of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) - Essential.
  • Familiarity with low arousal, child-led, neuro-affirming approach - Essential.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of demand avoidance in children - Essential.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of DIR Floortime – Desirable.
Job-Related Skills:
  • Able to assist with planning and implementing educational activities with him using a creative and flexible approach to teaching and learning according to his learning abilities.
  • Ability to minimise stress and anxiety for both children by utilising a low arousal approach - Essential.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with children and parents – Essential.
  • Organisational skills, i.e., ability to implement structure, strong time management imperative - Essential.
  • Social, play and life skills – Essential.
  • Relationship building skills - Essential.
Benefits:
  • Support and training from a multi-disciplinary team knowledgeable in the field of Neurodiversity.
Working hours:
  • Monday to Friday: 12:00-17:00
  • Flexible hours on weekends (as needed)
  • School holidays: 08:00-17:00
Salary Range:
· R12 000 – R12 500 per month (for standard weekdays from 12:00-17:00)
· Hourly rate for extra hours and weekends
