What
does a day in this job look like?
Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park is a 60ha park located on the northwest outskirts of Hamilton, across the road from Hamilton Zoo.

The park is on its way to becoming a self-sustaining sanctuary that represents the original ecosystem diversity of the Hamilton Basin. The park has a peat lake (Waiwhakareke or Horseshoe Lake), and wetland ecosystems with native plantings being restored.

You will work across the Te Kaaroro Nature Precinct which includes the Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park, Hamilton Zoo and Hamilton Observatory. This is a key role within a team of passionate and energetic individuals who have a large focus on Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park, primarily undertaking native restoration, invasive species management and positive biodiversity outcomes to the highest standard.

You will collaborate with the curator and work alongside other rangers to implement standards of operation and ensure the development of the park aligns with the strategic vision of Te Kaaroro. This is a 12-month fixed term opportunity.

Other key duties include:
  • Working within the park in various areas daily to complete operational work with planting, weed control, pest control and park maintenance.
  • Ensure all allocated plant, equipment and resources are maintained in a clean and tidy, useable condition.
  • Supporting the Curator with planning and reporting for the park.
  • Undertake special projects and growth opportunities in conjunction with the Curator.
  • Completing plants, bird, and wildlife surveys where applicable.
  • Assisting the Curator in reintroductions and translocations of native fauna.
  • Assist with the upkeep of all Zoo and Waiwhakareke planted areas – including tree maintenance, lawn and pasture management, animal fodder plantations, garden development and upkeep, and weed control.


Skills and experience we are seeking:
  • Previous Environmental Restoration experience or knowledge.
  • Strong understanding and expertise (or willingness to learn) in planting, setting out plants, maintenance of planted areas, light wells, pests and weed controls specific to the unique ecology in the park.
  • Passion for conservation and community involvement/education.
  • Knowledge and a passion for fauna and flora, primarily NZ natives.
  • Knowledge of invasive weed species and their management.
  • Experience (or willingness to learn) in machinery and restoration tools such as ATV, Tractors, Chainsaw, scrub bar etc.
  • Current Full NZ driver’s license.
  • Must be physically fit and able to cope with the demands of gully and hill restoration.
  • Collaborative working style and builds strong relationships with team members.
  • Initiative to improve work processes and systems.

What’s
