The Biodiversity, Heritage and Visitors Group oversee DOC's science, technical and operational policy expertise, and advice, translating policy into action for our operational branches to support them to deliver excellent conservation initiatives at place.

He angitūtanga | About the role
We are looking for an experienced advisor with sound botanical and plant ecology knowledge who has strong relationship building skills, is an effective communicator and influencer, and who has an inclusive approach to their work. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in conservation management to provide strategic and technical support for indigenous flora and ecosystem management to the DOC Operations teams in the South Island, to other DOC business groups, external conservation partners and to inform DOC biodiversity prioritisation and planning systems.
The role will provide quality advice on the management and monitoring of threatened plants and their habitats and provide support to ecosystem management programmes. Other focus areas of the role include supporting ecological assessment of sites, acting as an expert witness for resource management applications (including Regional and District Plan reviews) and providing advice on concessions and permits issued by DOC.
Opportunities to support other technical and strategic biodiversity projects led by the Terrestrial Biodiversity Unit and contribute to research and systems improvement will be possible.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

  • Strong botanical skills and understanding of plant ecology, ideally within a South Island context.
  • Robust understanding of ecological principles and ability to assess the ecological significance of sites.
  • Evidence of using initiative and independent judgement to deal with critical tasks.
  • Good influencing skills and a collaborative approach to work.
  • Able to establish trusted relationship with others including external partners.
  • Evidence of skilful writing, editing and oral communication skills.
  • Able to plan and organise work and resources across work streams and meet timeframes.
  • A relevant post-graduate tertiary science qualification or equivalent experience.
This position is office-based with the opportunity for relevant field work. Travel is required within the northern and central South Island and occasionally into to other locations throughout New Zealand. A current driver's licence is required. This role is based in either Nelson or Christchurch.

Mō te tīma | About the team
The team supports DOC business groups and external conservation partners by leading the provision of strategic and technical expertise focused on indigenous flora and ecosystems management and research. The role will report to the Flora and Ecosystems Team Manager, Terrestrial Biodiversity Unit.

The salary range for this position is $79,656- $116,985 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
