He angitūtanga | About the role
How would you like to work amongst some of Aotearoa's most stunning sites the North Island has to offer? Enjoy the diversity of your mahi, where no two days are the same.
The Ranger Biodiversity, Heritage and Visitor is a crucial operational role within the close-knit Whanganui Team. Your team is responsible for the visitor assets and biodiversity in the region (huts, tracks, structures, campgrounds, signs, amenity areas, pest animals and plants) within the district. Your key focus will be maintenance of these assets. You will be able to work as part of a team, on your own, or leading the team. You will work to prescriptive sets of standards within budgets to achieve positive experiences at place for visitors and protect biodiversity. You will scope and manage packages of work by utilising your practical and technical skills, and your literacy and numeracy skills. Liaise with external partners and stakeholders such as Iwi, community groups, Councils, and landowners.

If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you:
  • Tertiary qualification in natural heritage, science, or conservation management.
  • Track construction, maintenance, building skills.
  • Backcountry experience.
  • Practical work experience in outdoor environments.
  • Great planning and organizational skills, with experience in leading projects.
  • Ability to understand, communicate and implement Standard Operating Procedures and detailed specifications.
  • Excavator operation experience.
  • Hunting and trapping expereince.
  • Proven expertise in planning, delivering, and reporting on operational projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in practical management of pest animals and plants.
  • Proven ability to collaborate, communicate and build relationships effectively with Iwi, community groups, and landowners.
  • A proactive work style focused on driving and maintaining progress.
  • Willingness to innovate and enhance existing work programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with experts to understand and apply technical advice.
  • Capable of working independently or as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft programs for data capture and report writing, with skills in interpreting GIS information and creating maps.
  • Full New Zealand Driver's Licence.
Desirable:
  • Class 1 or above New Zealand Driver's License.
  • Carpentry/construction/practical skills.
  • Growsafe certification.
  • Chainsaw experience and qualifications.
  • 4WD experience.
  • Scrub-bar/weed eater experience.
  • SAP experience.
  • GIS skills.
