  • Enjoy work that is varied, interesting, and rewards an inquisitive mind
  • Dunedin, or broader South Island location
At Te Papa Atawhai, Department of Conservation we express our spirit of service and serve Aotearoa through our purpose, Papatūānuku Thrives. Our organisational strategy, Te Kaupapa a Te Papa Atawhai, puts nature and people at the heart of everything we do. It is anchored by te reo Māori and te ao Māori, recognising that Te Tiriti o Waitangi and our whānau, hapū and iwi are central to all our mahi.

He angitūtanga | About the role
As the Principal Investigations Officer your primary purpose is to lead complex investigations into suspected breaches of the legislation administered by the Department. This will include breaches of existing concessions contracts. You will also contribute to the management of the department's compliance case management triage process, lead in-field operations, train warranted officers and rangers and contribute to the establishment of national operational standards and procedures.

A current practitioner with search and surveillance legislation, criminal procedure, evidence and disclosure knowledge, you will be able to rapidly absorb and process information.
The ideal candidate will have skills in leading, mentoring and coaching small teams, and an interest in conservation. This is an operational position requiring the ability to work outdoors with the possibility of travel to all parts of New Zealand.
