Plant Fitters/Fitter Operator Group


We are seeking a skilled and motivated Plant Fitter to join our team on the West Coast. This role is integral to ensuring the reliable operation maintenance and compliance of our Kiwirail Hi-rail vehicle fleet, Contractors Equipment plus Kiwirail owned Plant and Equipment across the West Coast.

This role requires a minimum qualification of Trade certificate / Mechanical Engineer Level 4.

  • Based in Greymouth
  • Rate starting of $38.63- $44.01 per hour (depending on experience and qualifications)
  • Full time, permanent position, Monday to Friday, plus overtime when required


Reporting to the Mechanisation Supervisor Southern and with the full support of our Technical Lead you will be responsible for the service and maintenance plus compliance of all of our West Coast based equipment.

Your home base will be Greymouth and you will be predominately covering the West Coast area. Cass to Greymouth / Hokitika to Ngakawau and all areas in-between.

There will be a requirement to support the Track Machine Group from time-to-time. This group services the rail network across the country. When supporting the Track Machine Group, you will work away from home for a period of 10 days (Tuesday to Thursday). An allowance is paid for nights away.

What you’ll do:
  • Maintenance and repairs plus compliance of a variety of small plant, Hi-rail vehicles, Turntables, and generators. Contractors' equipment compliance.
  • Occasionally provide support with the repair and maintenance of track machines, Tampers / Regulators Stabiliser and operating the machine when required
  • Conduct maintenance checks and repairs on site and in remote locations
  • Ensure the productivity of the machine group is set out as per the Rail operating code
  • Improve the reliability and availability of the plant and fleet


What you’ll need:
  • A relevant Trade certificate or Level 4 - Mechanical Engineering qualification. Mechanic, Hydraulic Technician, Fitter.
  • Prior experience in a mechanical environment - preferably in a heavy or automobile industry
  • Experience in machine upgrades, or heavy equipment, wagons, or ship
  • Ability to analyse and interpret hydraulic & pneumatic control circuit diagrams, low voltage electrical control circuit diagrams, fault finding, develop alternate methods
  • Good knowledge of relevant engineering specifications, standards, sound engineering practices
  • Experience in reading shop drawings, plans and machine manuals
  • Self-directed unsupervised site work and use of initiative
  • Experience with Welding and hot works
  • Competent with MS Office suite
  • Be committed to supporting a team environment
  • Possession of current, Full NZ Class 1 Drivers licence (Class 2 is desirable)
