Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi offers the highest standards of tertiary education from certificate to doctorate levels, including programmes for international scholars of indigenous studies. Our vision is to promote, grow and sustain Māori language, knowledge and culture, according to tikanga Māori practice.

This is an exciting time to be part of Māori and indigenous scholarship, and our success relies on the excellence of our people and our connection to the communities that we serve. We offer a stimulating teaching, research and professional working environment in one of our three campuses: our main campus in Whakatāne, Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) and Te Tai Tokerau (Northland).

This degree programme aims to graduate future teachers who will teach children aged 5-13 years (Primary) or 0-8 years (Early Years) and as a Lecturer you will be responsible for the delivery of Māori Medium and Mainstream Medium education where all or some of the national curriculum strands are taught in Te Reo Māori or English medium education taught solely in English.

As a Lecturer, your primary responsibility will be to plan and deliver quality lectures and assessments, to support learning through face to face and online mediums, monitor the papers and mentor students, and to undertake research.

Delivery of the programme will take place during the week Monday – Thursday. There are also scheduled noho throughout the programme. While the delivery sites include Whakatāne, Tamaki, and Whāngarei, as a Lecturer you will be part of the wider Education team of staff based at Whakatāne campus.

Applicants will be able to demonstrate excellence in teaching using a variety of skills and ranges of methodologies and techniques including the use of online teaching tools. You will also have:
  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in Education.
  • Tertiary teaching experience with experience monitoring, assessing, and delivering curriculum, and Early Years papers and courses at degree level.
  • A teaching qualification and a minimum of five years Early Years or Primary teaching experience (Kura Kaupapa or mainstream).
  • Te Reo Māori proficiency to at least level 6, and the ability to deliver in Māori medium. Fluency in Te Reo Māori is preferred and/or
Pacific Communities languages proficiency and knowledge and practice of Pacific Communities cultural competency.
  • A comprehensive understanding of Tīkanga Māori which you can apply in educational settings.
  • Knowledge of Te Whāriki, Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, and the New Zealand curriculum.
  • A current, unrestricted private motor vehicle driver’s licence.

To deliver this programme and to support student teachers in early years and primary school settings for practicum, you must be a registered teacher with the New Zealand Teaching Council and hold a current category 1 practicing certificate.

We offer a supportive working environment and welcome candidates from all backgrounds to apply.
