Intensive Care Specialists

Intensive Care Specialists

New Zealand’s ICU teams have opportunities for intensivists, physicians with an interest in critical care medicine, dual trained specialist intensivists, or anaesthetists or emergency medical specialist with an interest in critical care medicine. We provide good career advancement and variety, allowing you to work with exposure to a wide range of cases from neuro and cardio postoperative surgery to paediatrics and trauma.

While the appealing lifestyle and adventures in New Zealand are enticing, you don’t have to make a permanent move to enjoy them. Whether you’re considering a short-term contract of a year or two or thinking longer term, we guarantee it will be a positive step for you, your family, and your ICU career. Plus, it’s all achievable with just a quick three-hour flight from most of Australia.

If you are in the final years of your registrar training, now is an excellent time to get in touch with us as well!

Contrary to popular belief, New Zealand offers competitive pay and benefits for Senior Medical Officers

Why Health New Zealand?

  • Training and development – we provide financial support for courses, exams and college fees.

  • The non-pay work conditions are good - rosters must meet MECA / SECA requirements, scrubs and meals provided, paid education time guaranteed.
  • Supportive environment - we have a flat structure with little hierarchy. There are no egos, creating a supportive and collaborative environment. Doctors in New Zealand are called by their first name, reflecting the down to earth nature of Kiwis.
  • Variety of care - most units provide critical care to a diverse group of patients - from paediatrics to neuro, cardiac, trauma, renal, respiratory, general medicine, haematology and surgery.
  • Adventure and lifestyle - an adventure and a change of pace... without going too far
  • Aeromedical retrieval - a unique feature in New Zealand ICUs, adding another dimension and skill set to your career, providing opportunities for adventure.
  • Wellbeing and culture - The emphasis on respecting Māori and Pacific cultures and being culturally aware is refreshing and important.
