Our Custody Unit team is expanding, and we are seeking motivated individuals to work as Custody Officers.
The role of a Custody Officer within NZ Police is pivotal. Custody Officers are responsible for providing care for detainees whilst they are in our custody and during transit.
You will be responsible for ensuring the health and safety of the detainee, monitoring behaviour and state, providing appropriate care and ensuring professional standards are continuously met. This role is not for the faint hearted and will require someone who is confident, open-minded, with attention to detail and willing to follow stringent safety procedures.
You will undergo training and orientation which will include 1 week of online training, 1 week residential training at the Royal New Zealand Police College, Porirua followed by 1 week training in Palmerston North.
Key Accountabilities:
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. * Resilience and perseverance with the ability to de-escalate situations in a calm and professional manner. * Strong attention to detail. Accurate and precise, the ability to record and prepare information such as statements for court. * Duty of care, understanding the welfare, health, safety and level of care required for detainees and people in our custody * Strong team player, reliable, trustworthy. * Decisive, and calm under pressure * Good computer skills and the ability to learn new systems as you will be required to input and update data accurately in Police systems. * High level of health and fitness.

- Shift work is a requirement which includes working, weekends and public holidays. You will be undertaking the same roster as a PST section: (2x earlies, 2x lates and 2x nights followed by 4 rostered days off).
- Full (clean) Class 1 NZ Driver’s License
- New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Residency.
- The ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and health checks.
- Good command of the English language.
- Strong level of fitness – you may be required to meet the standards of our Physical Assessment.
This role is set at Individual Contributor level, this means your key purpose is “to deliver or enable others to deliver Our Business”.

Utu ā-tau | Salary
This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $74,748 and $78,129 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
