Mō te tūnga | About the role
Our Family Support team provide holistic care to our patients, families and whānau in the community and in our in-patient units. We need a qualified Counsellor to join our Family Support team in a permanent part time position, to support patients and whānau with grief and bereavement counselling in individual, family, or group sessions. You will:
  • Receive referrals and assess the psychosocial needs of patients and whānau
  • Invite people to engage in the counselling relationship and give opportunities for them to share their experience
  • Provide face to face counselling services drawing on evidence-based practice such as narrative therapy
  • Play an active role in the multidisciplinary team, communicating cases clearly and contributing to patient management
  • Work with colleagues and external agencies to provide best support for family/whānau
This is a permanent part time position working 24 hours per week. Days can be negotiated.
He kōrero mōu| About you
You have experience in palliative care and/or grief and loss counselling and a genuine interest in and affinity with the work of Hospice. We’re looking for a special type of person who has the life skills and professional counselling experience to provide compassionate counselling services to patients and whānau. You will allow space for them to try talk about the issues they’re facing and how to deal with the multitude of emotions, thoughts and feelings they are experiencing.
You will demonstrate:
  • A degree or post graduate qualification in counselling
  • Current practicing certificate from either the New Zealand Association of Counsellors or New Zealand Christian Counsellors Association
  • A willingness and openness to learning about and work with different cultures and perspectives including Te Ao Māori
  • A collaborative and motivated approach to working in teams
  • A natural curiosity and keenness to innovate and try new things

Harbour Hospice is one of the largest hospices in Aotearoa and has been caring for tūroro (patients) and their family and whānau for more than 40 years. Every day we care for close to 400 people across the North Shore, Hibiscus Coast and Warkworth/Wellsford regions, supporting them at home, in one of our two inpatient units, or in community programmes offered at each of our three sites. Our specialist services, given free of charge, include medical care, spiritual, cultural, psychological and social support, physiotherapy, occupational and complementary therapy, social activities and more. We are a progressive organisation that puts each patient, whānau and family, our community and our people, at the heart of everything.
