Compliance Officer - Pollution Response

Thriving together - mō te taiao, mō ngā tāngata.
Our environment and our people go hand-in-hand.
Toi Moana Bay of Plenty Regional Council is looking for an experienced Compliance Officer for our Complaints Response Team (CRT) who can effectively engage with people and get them working towards solutions for improved environmental outcomes and to achieve compliance.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated individual with excellent communication skills to join our CRT in responding to environmental and pollution complaints across the region. This role would suit an individual who has had relevant post-qualification work experience in managing and assessing compliance activities under the RMA.

Te āhuatunga a te tūranga | About the role

Based primarily in Tauranga, but with the opportunity to work region wide, and reporting directly to the Compliance Team Leader, you’ll join a busy and hardworking team to:
  • Respond to and investigate environmental complaints across the region
  • Promote, educate and inform people on strategies to achieve compliance
  • Direct and assist with any chemical or oil spill clean up
  • Liaise with other agencies such as territorial authorities, Work Safe, DOC, FENZ, NZ Police and other stakeholder groups
  • Handle sensitive and sometimes contentious issues with consent holders.
The CRT is part of the wider Compliance Team. We monitor resource consents and regional rules to ensure conditions are met. Where conditions are breached, the team follows up with the consent holder to get them back into compliance. We’re a tightknit and hard-working team; we promote the 4Es model to encourage compliance – we engage with parties and stakeholders, we educate, we enable opportunities for people to see best practice, and we enforce when breaches are identified.
Ō pūmanawa | Your skills and experience

  • A relevant tertiary degree in science, environmental management or similar
  • At least one year of experience working in compliance under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA)
  • Well-developed negotiation skills with the ability to resolve conflict situations
  • Creative approach to problem solving
  • Great written and verbal communication skills
  • Community, cultural, tikanga maori and political awareness
Ko wai mātou | Who we are
Toi Moana Bay of Plenty Regional Council is responsible for land, air and water as well as public transport and economic development. A major focus of our work involves looking after the environment. We manage the effects of people's use of freshwater, land, air and coastal water. We are a values-driven organisation, that really cares about our people. Who you are is important to us and we welcome diversity as an opportunity to grow our teams and are keen to support people of all gender identities, ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations, religions and abilities. We want Toi Moana to be a place where you bring your whole self to work.
Highlights of working with us include:
  • Varied and challenging work that makes a positive difference to our community and environment.
  • Opportunities for growth, learning and development, including building capabilities in Te Ao Māori.
  • Flexible working culture; supportive and collaborative work environment with a focus on well-being.
  • A competitive remuneration and holiday leave package.
This role is located in Tauranga.
